- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I've been wanting to read this since I read the blurb and while it was definitely entertaining, I just wish it could have been longer, so there could be a bit more character development, as well as answer some questions about certain things that happened in the book that were never addressed.Youngest son of the Ripley vampire hunter family, Oliver has always known he was different from the rest of his family, but he never knew why. After leaving the family home in Indiana, he ends up in Chicago, where he is determined to prove that he too can be a kick-ass vampire hunter and hopefully be accepted by his family. His first night in Chicago proves to be a success, but what Oliver doesn't realize is that his first kill sets off a chain of events no one could have ever predicted. He meets Miranda, a vampire who wants to kill the person responsible for killing a member of her vampire clan, but once the two meet, it becomes obvious that they are destined to be together, regardless of their families being sworn enemies. Once it becomes clear that each of them are far different from their families, they simultaneously begin a quest to learn not only why they're different, but now they're both on the run from Miranda's vampire family and Oliver's vampire hunter family, both of whom want to see Oliver and Miranda dead.We eventually learn the truth behind both Oliver's and Miranda's conceptions and how that made them different, but we never learn exactly how Oliver's blood affected his older brother Jonathon. Which brings me to: Jonathon is supposed a feared vampire hunter, but his demise seemed way too easy; granted, he deserved what he got after what he almost accomplished, but I just wish that scene could have had more buildup and action to it.This was my first time reading this author's work, but I can sure guarantee it won't be my last. I definitely recommend this book.
