    Early Life

    Mary Helen MacKillop was born on January 5, 1842, in Fitzroy, in the Australian colony of Victoria. She was the first child of Alexander MacKillop and Flora MacDonald. She had three sisters and four brothers. One of her brothers died at eleven months of age.

    Mary’s parents both came from Scotland, but they met and married in Australia.
