To my mother: From one woman’s heart to another.

    About the author:

Lebogang Sewela, who spent most of her toddler years in Johannesburg, was born in Pretoria, South Africa. It was here where she started keeping journals and writing songs, when teenage-ship clenched on her back, like most, she overlooked her passion for writing, nevertheless, she later found her love in the strangest of places.

Her writing skills elevated from writing songs to writing little motivational pieces, poetry and autobiography. Progressively she became more and more interested in becoming a writer, so she entered essay-writing contests.

She never got used to the thrill and excitement of winning these essay competitions. Her greatest thrill came when she won a scholarship for an essay competition to attend a leadership camp in London. Since then on; you could try, but you could never catch the artist Lebogang Sewela.

I grew up as a besieged young lady, from being molested as a child to living in a family with conflicts and all the other misfortunes that women go through. I then received a prophecy from God that I must bring change. I must inspire women out there who need inspiration. By God’s grace I conquered a lot and I’m here to share the tales of my journey just to remind you that you are not alone. She says.

I am a God-fearing woman, and this journey that I am about to share with you, I did not walk it alone. God had always been there and he still is. The challenges that I faced are real and I am sure a lot of women can relate… most of all, my message is never to besiege a woman’s heart; for a woman’s heart is God’s heart.

    Chapter 1

    A woman’s insecurity

We choose our friends but we don’t choose our families, remember this saying? It has been rehearsed time and again in our lives. When I was a teenager, I heard it countless times but I did not care for its meaning. It is my life, right? But if it was, I would have dictated my roots including growth in it or at least had a say.

Most women’s insecurities vary, if it is not about their appearance or the way they walk, it is about their portrayal of character: something always exists that denies them a sense of peace. In my case, my greatest obstacle was my background especially when it came to my upbringing. Insecurities that absorbed me as a toddler clouded my life until I reached my final year of high school (matric). It has been an unbearable journey and my back still feels the dreadful ache.

One unforgettable day on having had come back from school around 6 p.m. (which was customary), being an active learner with countless extra-mural activities, I arrived to an empty house. My mom and my little brother had moved!

I was bruised, especially considering that it was happening for the third time. Or rather, to be more frank, it was the third time that we were evicted. Mother passed it off as just another move for the landlord’s family member needing to occupy our then house. We then moved back to our previous place where we had been previously evicted – at my grandmother’s house. All these events transpired during my grade twelve (senior year), the most critical and busiest time in every student’s life.

In all honest truth, it was not easy to pull through but I had faith. The only thing that kept me going was school even though it offered little hope. Reflecting back, I now know that I endured by the grace of God. During that period I knew little about God’s grace. Only now do I understand that there was no way that I had done it by my own strength.

As a family oriented young woman, sadly I did not grow up in a peaceful home. My mother and grandmother did not get along. So was she with my uncle; they always had verbal and physical confrontations. Their fights went on for a long period of time. They took place in our presence thus affecting peace all around. I was compelled to accept the situation while urging peace to visit and live within me for our environment did not grant it. Growing up in such a family setting without peace was challenging and unhealthy. One of the major effects of it is that one grows in despair. Sometimes you grow to
