    Part I

    England and Brazil

The dawn has brought silens and warmly. The ship Victoria straightened all its sails after seven – day storm and was sailing of the same direction to the North – West. It was belonged to the East – Indian company and sailed to the southern coasts of India for transportation of prepared freight which was in the port of Bombay to England: tea, spices, cotton. The captain of the ship was Sir Robert Scott, comparatively young man, but already tested a large number of seas and gained a valuable experience from the long sails.

Born in close mountainous Scottish village, he had never seen the sea before, however Robert Scott, dreamed to become a sailor from his childhood. The sea attracted him by its scope, inebriated freedom and unrestrained element, which he dreamed to subjugate in the soul. The nature generosily endowed him for this purpose; he was more than six feet tall, broad – shouldered, leaned a little, with sharp but pleasant features. His strong hands and keen eyes add his portrait. But the main was his powerful strong spirit, ineradicable fire, burning in his breast; when he got down to any business, he did it with such insistency and persistence, that even Hercules himself would envy him. This spirit, this inexhaustible energy finally made him a captain. Doubled the southern extremity of Africa, in seventeen days, three – mаsted ship got into the heavy storm, that damaged it but not so strong: torn the sailcloth somewhere, the rigging; over turned the cask with provision, but the main, it broke off all the mess - dishes with drinking water. Because of carelessness the assistant of the watch officer, sea water got in the rest of safe mess - dishes, and now this mixture might only be drunk with aversion. Ship’s crew began to grumble and the captain Scott, decided to lead the ship on twelve degrees easterner, in order to avoid rebellion, he looked for any island, to fill up the stock of drinking water. Fell down of the captain Scott and his crew misfortunes were not stopped by that, There was more serious damage, which was not discovered neither captain nor his zealous helpers: the storm damaged the basis head of the ship’s instrument – mariner’s compass and now not knowing the captain led the ship by deviation from its course. In three days, when the crew already suffered of thirst a watchman on the most shouted a land. The first assistant hurried to the captain who was in his cabin at that time.

    - Sir, Singli noticed the land!

    - It is wonderful Smith. Order to set additional sails on the fore mast. We have to land on the shore before the sun -set.

    -Yes, Sir! – answered Smith.

The captain ordered the rudder to change the course on two points of North-West and the ship driving on the fresh wind, rushed to the least appeared part of the Earth. After seven -eight hours the ship came up to the solitude island with growing palms, and a big bay but so as it was getting dark and nothing more would be identified, the captain ordered to drop anchor approximately one mile from the shore. Strengthened the night roughness didn’t bother the captain and his crew to look forward to the morning. The night passed quietly and with the first rays of the sun the boat was ready with six rowers headed by the captain mate . Soon the boat was dropped on the water and the crew began to row hard. The boat went into the bay and landed to the shore for a short time.

Smith Calton (it was he) ordered two men to stay in the boat and to keep watch it, with the others, he went to the shore, catching a gun with himself in any case, looking around, he watched from his spy glass from to time to time and moved forward to the depths of the island with his sailors, to look for the source of drinking water.A beautiful island opened before them! The whole edge of the shore was strewed by soft and warm sand, along the perimeter, green bushes grew here and there, the big groups of coco nut palms standing around of it, shortish hills were seen, in the centre of the island formed a long ridge and covered by soft green vegetation. Approached to the hills they saw not a big grove, of some exotic trees, the grove was so thick, that through of its trunks and branches it was impossible to distinguish anything. But in the centre of the grove there dimly guessed something to look like a regulateness.

    - Hey, dock! – said one of the sailors. – Doesn`t it seem to you that these trees are quite different from the others which grow here? – and he pointed out to the side of the grove.

-Something always seemed to you John – answered Smith. I thought, yesterday I ordered only one portion of rum in the honour of the island!

Yes Sir, one portion! – exclaimed John turning to the official tone.

So, having a talk and watching a locality the group gradually approached to the grove. There was discovered a small river on the right side of them, which flowed near the trees and gradually deeped into the ravine, therefore it was not seen from a distance. With the shouts Water! Water! sailors ran up to the river, and fell down on the surface, began to drink greedily. Smith did the same. Having drunk and washed their faces, finally they paid attention to the grove. Really, the grove had artificially origin, that very surprised the captain mate and specially sailors. Trunks of the trees grew so closely, that formed natural palisade, thick crown of trees hid the strong structure inside of it. In the palisade they noticed an aperture, leading to the inside of this strange dwelling. The group went inside of this yard with high carefulness and circumspection.

In spite of that, they had seen much in their life, opened picture before eyes of these sea wolves amused their imagination. Inside of the palisade they saw the same palisade but smaller one, behind of its wall there was a big, firm brick house, reminded a tower. There was not less than fifty steps from the outward wall to the the centre of the building. Along the walls of the outward palisade there were fixed different kinds of shelves, there also stood big earthen bottles, twined by the rod; there were buskets filled up of something and packaged accurately by copra: there were a lot of house hold equipments set and hung up to the wall. Found out a massive door in the inward centre of palisade, Smith with his group turned out in another huge, round yard, there was a house at the end of it, which fixed by its back wall to the hill. The entrance doors of the house certainly, were not locked and the group went into the first room, it was planked by the good quality wood on the inside. Here in the middle of the room, there was a big table and some chairs, deck-chairs placed along the wall . There were few doors in the room, leading to the other rooms. Going through the middle of the room to the back wall, Smith opened a firm door and saw a long, dark corridor, it was laid inside by baked bricks.

It looks like a devil’s dwelling, - whispered one of the sailors. – We shall not go further, shall we?

Go to hell! – a bit louder but firmly answered Smith. – If I would never see even a sip of rum but however I reached to the end, even if the devil itself lived here.

Saying these words Smith began to move along the corridor. The sailors went after him with hesitation. In that way, passing ten or twelve yards, they opened the door at the end and found themselves in a big hall with poor lighting, on the threshold they stood like a stony, admired of the beauty of structure and decoration. There was no comparison of this beautiful hall with those of poor dwellings where they have been just now. The walls were laid by excellent baked bricks, the ceiling was adorned by valuable, thin work of moulding and carving, the vaults were supported by slim marble columns, forming a circle. In the middle of the hall there was a huge dome, decorated by good – quality wood, carving and incrustation, along of its perimeter on equal direction from each – other were placed not big oblong windows, with light turbid glasses, therefore they reflected this soft light, creating mystery and quietness. Beautiful carpets were hung on the walls of the hall, weapons with gilding, and incrustation of valuable stones. Began from the elegant furniture, wardrobe, secretary and finished of tables and chairs, various sofas and couches were decorated by thin carving of valuable milky – coffee colour. Completed this picture, by the smooth floor made of blue stone with mosaic, on which there also laid big handmade carpets. All these appointments, deserving the kings were covered by thin dust, witnessed that there was nobody for quite a long time.

    – Here must be live some Crez or masons,- said John with trembled voice. – It would be better for us to go out, dock!

    – Damn it all, fellow! Even there were a dozen of devils, I would risk to hand all this treasure! – exclaimed Smith.

Several side doors were seen in the hall.

    – Glenn and you Dick, look about the rooms on the left side, and I with John begin from the right side, – ordered captain`s mate. They opened the first door at the right and came into the room which had the same decoration as in the hall but in rather small size, suddenly Smith and the sailor went back in horror, a huddled dried mummy of a man lay on the floor. It was seen that he was sitting on the chair and writing in a large folio, which lay before him on the table. The death reached him suddenly, and he fell down on the table, toppled over the chair and dropped the feather. Cool and good ventilation ended this procedure; gradually the body got dried, untill it turned into something like a mummy. Finally John cheered and approached to the table and had a look at the book.

–Sir, it is written in English, – said he.

Smith came up and inclined over the book.

    – It is worth taking with us immediately, – said he, closing the book and passing it to the sailor. Perharps, it might open the secret death of this man. Saying these words he went to the door in the hall, the sailor followed him.

    – Glenn, Dick! – shouted the captain`s mate and when they went out of the room, appeared in the hall he continued; – That’s enough for today it is high time to return to the ship and report about everything to the captain.

The group moved to the exit. Going outside, they hurried to their boat. Smith ordered sailors to fill two kegs with fresh water, which they took with themselves. In an hour Smith was on the ship and reported to the captain about the unusual incident which was happened with them on the island. In the evening after supper when the Captain Robert Scott was left alone in his cabin,he opened the folio and began to study it.At first he opened it from that page, on which the life of writing man was suddenly stopped. The captain read the last unfinished phrase: I thanked God and the fate for that, in unusual circumstances it brought me with the most outstanding person in the world, who opened my eyes, and opened the truth, really made me a man who by hard work and patience, …, the further a
