About this ebook
Chloe Maitland lives in a dying Oregon mining town and has given up her girlish dreams of love and marriage. What she needs is a man to answer her advertisement for a blacksmith to work in her shop and help save her home from foreclosure. Instead she gets Travis McGuire, an exhausted stranger who collapses in her yard, looking like the devil himself, and proves to be far more dangerous.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Travis McGuire was framed for the murder of his young, faithless wife and, unable to prove his innocence, he was sentenced to life in prison on the testimony of one man. Five years later his accuser retracted his testimony and Travis was released. Mysteriously, however, a merciless bounty hunter has been hot on Travis’s trail ever since. It figures. For many years, McGuire’s life has been one long string of bad luck. Out of options, he decides to respond to a want ad for a blacksmith in an isolated, dying mining town. Pay: Room and board. His string of ill luck continues and he makes it to his destination through grim determination.Chloe Maitland’s drunken father has died leaving her a smithy with no blacksmith, and a home with a mortgage she has no means to pay. Her life is an endless round of the laundry she now takes in, which barely pays her enough to keep food on her table. She survives in the dying mining town by dent of a strong will, and a sharp tongue. Chloe must overcome her mistrust of Travis. Travis must stop running from his past. Both of these strong-willed personalities must let down the guard that shields their hearts before they are able to find their home in each other. The characters in this story are well-developed and mature over the course of time. The setting is fundamental to the story, and feels realistic. My one comment with regard to the plot is that the problem at the heart of Travis’s travail is too neatly and easily resolved. Nevertheless, this is a good book which I enjoyed. The Kindle version does have quite a few formatting problems, which can be a bit distracting.
