Prepare For Departure
I sat with my feet tucked under me, a slight sweat bead forming on my back. These Philadelphia summers were no joke and the fan I had set up in the window of my office
really wasn’t providing much relief. The only saving grace was the sun was setting and soon the darkness would swallow up the oppressive heat of the July summer.
What do they even call them anyway?
My boyfriend Sayid was looking over my shoulder as I searched Wikipedia for facts on Guam. Yeah, Guam. I know….I had to check Wikipedia and find out its exact location and what exactly would I call the people who lived there. I didn’t want
to be the typical ugly American
and if I planned on being there, I wanted to at least get the nationality right. I was slightly fascinated when I discovered the natives of the island were Tano and Chamorro-not Guamanians as some of my friends so helpfully had suggested.
It was about a year ago while I was thumbing through the exotic dancer classifieds (they exist) I saw the ad for Club Showtime. It seemed like just what I was looking for:
Dancers! Come to the beautiful island of Guam. Tropical weather, beautiful beaches and no passport needed! Earn $450 a week plus tips working the easiest job on earth!
During college, I worked briefly as an exotic dancer. After holding a string of 9-5 jobs after graduation, I decided to return full time to stripping. Sure, the money at one point was nice but I really enjoyed the flexibility I had with my schedule. But now between the unappealing Philadelphia weather and the same gnarly guys touching you every night, I decided I could use a change of scenery. What started out fun was turning mundane-work almost seemed like work. The money started to dwindle in Philly strip clubs.
It seemed almost good to be true, and after watching so many seasons of Investigation Discovery, I was nervous this might be a trip I never returned from. However, I still managed to call the number listed and spoke with a really nice lady who gave a brief synopsis of the work. More importantly I found out the club paid for you to fly there if you stayed two months. Still, I decided to pass on the opportunity on my first inquiry. I hadn’t yet put my adventure pants on and two months seemed like a long time.
It seemed like fate when about three months ago I was randomly surfing online and found the same club advertising for dancers. I worked up the courage to send an email to the address included in the ad, along with some pictures. When I finally got a response, it was from a woman named Veronica. We sent a couple of emails back and forth until I was finally convinced that it wasn’t some type of slavery ring.
Veronica really made me excited with her talk of girls earning $5000 weekly while on the island. I was also given permission to bring any extra items, like pictures or movies that would bring me more business. Veronica made it a point to stress the clubs were fully nude in Guam, something that tended to make girls nervous. I had dabbled in some adult movies while dancing, so being fully nude in a room full of people really wasn‘t that hard for me. Guam could really add up to be a great money maker for me.
