About the Author
Broken Bones
The sky was clear and beautiful, the makings of a day he could only pray for in the late fall. The mountains rose to unreal heights over his head and a cool breeze touched his face as he walked up the trail. The yellow of the tamarack trees reminded him of the cold that would be coming.
Seth shifted the pack on his back. The straps were worn and cut into his shoulders. The pack was heavy with food but lighter than when he began his trek this morning. The camelback he had rigged up inside it was almost empty. He would need to find water soon. He had been climbing for over two hours.
Why he was here he couldn’t really explain. He had just felt like going for another hike. He started a few hours ago. He didn’t really have a destination or feel the need for one.
Perhaps the empty house inspired his trek. The kids were gone off to college and his wife was gone to take care of her mother. He had no desire to leave the cool of the mountains for the sweltering heat of Arizona so he let her go alone. He regretted it now. For the first time in a heap of dog years he was lonely. The guy who had been preaching at his kids to leave the house since the time they were three did not want to admit that he missed them.
He went for hikes instead. Long walks through the forest to this lake or that peak: sometimes with a fishing rod or a rifle. Today he had his pistol strapped on for bear necessity,
but other than that he was unarmed. The days when he went to hunt or fish for food were far back in his youth. This was a trail he had never taken. The map said it should loop around once he crested the hill and take him right back to where his truck was parked.
A deer came sprinting down the path directly at him, and only veered slightly to go around. It looked spooked. Suddenly he was jolted out of his reverie. His senses woke.
Smoke, he thought. I smell smoke.
It was then he noticed the birds. They were all taking flight. The few that remained chattered in unbelievably high and frantic voices and fluttered their wings unsure what to do.
RUN! RUN! the crows seemed to screech as they took to the sky.
Chirping. Cawing. A skunk ran by barely glancing up at him. The animals were moving fast.
He looked ahead. Smoke was rising fast and he could hear the crackle of flames. He had to have nearly walked in to the fire without even knowing it was there. It must have just started.
He hesitated only a moment, and then turned to run. But something caught his eye.
There, on a ridge high up. A glint of reflected light and then a glimpse of red waving. He squinted, and then brought his binoculars up to his eyes. There was a kid up there. He had a mirror and a red bandana he was waving. He was signaling for help.
Shit!
Seth shouted. He looked first at the smoke and then the figure waving far above. He looked around and made a split second decision. He started to climb again, leaving the trail to skirt the fire.
The going was tough. Downed logs tried to trip him and thorn bushes tore at his pants. The smoke began to thicken, and although he knew he was going the right direction, he was afraid the fire would spread sideways and overtake him. He was constantly tense, his eyes watering as he tried to see ahead.
Suddenly a clearing appeared and the trail widened. It was not a trail he had seen on the map, but the smoke was less, the fire seemingly downwind and headed the opposite direction. The smoke was blowing away from him for the moment. Standing in the clearing he made a quick decision and began to run up the trail. He could not see the kid ahead any more but he could not turn back now. As he ran he pulled trail mix from his pocket and began to drop M & M’s from the mix onto the trail. He figured the animals were preoccupied enough with running that the candy might lead him back down this way: that was if he found the kid, and the fire had not covered this trail by then.
Up ahead he saw a brown shape and he slowed. He still moved quickly, but realized the shape was moving in the same direction he
