About this ebook

Watersheds, those pivotal moments after which nothing is quite the same, form a fluid theme for this collection of bits and pieces. It could be as inconsequential as getting through a difficult day with a relative and looking forward to better times ahead, as in the Jane Austen-inspired first story. Or it could be the prospect of personal transformation, or a sudden realization, or even the end of civilization as we know it.

When Chaz Darcy thought of Sunday afternoons he thought of pushing, because that’s what he did.

He pushed his mother in a dilapidated wheelchair that seemed to fight every inch of their weekly circuit around the suburban roads surrounding the nursing home.

Indeed, he found it hard to decide whether occupant or conveyance protested more. The wheelchair headed straight for crevices and potholes it must have recognized from years of this routine, like a rented stable horse testing succeeding riders.

I know what you’re up to, growled his mother as she gripped the handrails, her slippered feet dangling dangerously over mud and ankle-twisting pitfalls. You’re trying to finish off the old lady, aren’t you.

Don’t be silly; I can’t help it if they don’t keep the pavement repaired, said Chaz, who had been named after a family friend. Well actually he’d been named Charles, but that was such a formal tag with which to face the modern world.

It wouldn’t be like this years ago, she countered. Your father would have had a fit to see things in this state.
