    Miki and the Boxing Gloves

    Chapter 1

There was great excitement in the Mavuya household. Miki’s cousin, Zap Mazela, the local up-and-coming boxing hero, was coming to tea.

Zap was a Cape Town boy. He had been brought up by Mrs Mavuya because both his parents had died when he was young. Now he was twenty-five and had been trained at the local gym in Khayelitsha. He had already had his name in the papers and been on TV. Zap was a celebrity!

Mrs Mavuya was rushing about, picking up magazines and checking that she had enough cups. Zap was always accompanied by a group of friends who wore the latest fashions and dark glasses. To eleven-year old Miki, dark glasses were a clear sign of fame. After you got famous, you couldn’t see quite so well anymore and you had to protect your eyesight. This included anyone who happened to be in your dazzling company.

To Miki’s irritation, his grandmother arrived with a huge baking pan. She was planning on baking something called Flakey Cakey in preparation for the party that was to be held after the fight the next day.

Granny Noo was notorious for producing the most inedible food. Most people would only pretend to eat her puddings, hiding as much as they could under napkins, in flower pots, and even in their pockets. Some were foolish enough to swallow a bite and there had been cases of people crawling into hospital after tasting a bite of a Granny Noo pudding.

But nobody had the courage to tell Granny Noo her cooking was terrible.

Granny Noo had the appearance of an angry beetle. Her hair was always covered by a scarf tied in two points on top of her head like antennae. She had a small, flat face with slanty eyes that slid from side to side when she was really angry. She was tough and wiry, and carried a walking stick hooked onto her belt that had smacked more small boys’ legs than it had ever
