About this ebook

"I was hooked by the end of page one and laughing out loud by the middle of page two." -- Lark Susak

A fun fantasy mystery starring Brenda -- a reluctant medium -- and Brian -- a Vigilante Demon with an impish sense of humor.

Brenda Steele has a problem. A Vigilante Demon wants her to use her powers to find murdered spirits and help him track down their killers. But Brian doesn't just catch criminals. He likes to play with them first, setting elaborate traps where the goal is to make the punishment fit the crime, while having as much fun as possible.

He's inventive, outrageous ... and reckless. His last partner died during one of his takedowns.

Along the way, Brenda discovers that Brian isn't as old, or as powerful, as he led her to believe. He might even be human. Whereas the murderer they're hunting, and the child he's holding prisoner, might not.

Chris Dolley

Chris Dolley is a New York Times bestselling author, a pioneer computer game designer and a teenage freedom fighter. That was in 1974 when Chris was tasked with publicising Plymouth Rag Week. Some people might have arranged an interview with the local newspaper. Chris created the Free Cornish Army, invaded the country next door, and persuaded the UK media that Cornwall had risen up and declared independence. As he told journalists at the time, 'It was only a small country, and I did give it back.'In 1981, he created Randomberry Games and wrote Necromancer, one of the first 3D first person perspective D&D computer games. In 2004, his acclaimed novel, Resonance, was the first book plucked out of Baen's electronic slushpile. Now he lives in rural France with his wife and a frightening number of animals. They grow their own food and solve their own crimes. The latter out of necessity when Chris's identity was stolen along with their life savings. Abandoned by the police forces of four countries who all insisted the crime originated in someone else's jurisdiction, he had to solve the crime himself. Which he did, and got a book out of it - the International bestseller, French Fried: One Man's Move to France With Too Many Animals And An Identity Thief. He writes SF, Fantasy, Mystery, Humour and Memoir. His memoir, French Fried, is an NY Times bestseller. What Ho, Automaton! - the first of his Reeves and Worcester Steampunk Mysteries series - was a finalist for the 2012 WSFA Small Press Award.

For those of us who enjoy humorous fantasy writing -- a la Christopher Moore's Practical Demonkeeping -- it can be hard to find a good fix. Medium Dead fits the bill well. Brenda, the heroine, is convinced by a demon to help her fight crime in the most hilarious way possible: via convincing a killer he is a headless zombie. The situations they find themselves in are tense but packed with hastily-improvised wack-a-doo plans. I got a copy of this over at Bookview Cafe and simply bought a copy on a lark, but I certainly plan to seek out more books by the author.

LibraryThing Early ReviewersThis is one of those 'in the mood' books - but when in the mood, it generally hit the quirky spot very well.Urban fantasy tropes abound - the squirmy demon, the suburban-type-medium, the amnesic ghost, the robbers (who really, REALLY should have picked a different profession (or day, or bank...), the family no-one should have - and that particular kind of over the top slapstick British humour that won't appeal to everyone, or will appeal on some days and not others, is spread around with cheerful glee.As a whole, the book read like the first part of something longer. If/when the second book is finished, I'd strongly suggest both be combined in some way because a few dangling ends and extended explanations could be dealt with that way. In particular, the latter half segues into something for sombre which a sequel could flip back into the lighter humour and sarcastic fun with the genre of the first half. Overall, a book I'll be keeping for those silly afternoons where something is required for a change of mindset.

There were moments in this book where I really enjoyed it, but there were moments where I really didn't resonate with it. Brenda can see the dead, she's a medium, and her life changes when she meets with Brian, who describes himself as a demon, but there are some questions. They get involved in some investigations where he uses his ability to shapeshift the two of them and teleport them as well. It's not a bad story but I think it suffered from having too much stuff being thrown at the story which led to a lot of confusion, the story could have lost a few elements and been tighter, but I overall I did enjoy it.

This is a fun urban-fantasy read about a divorcee who is trying to put her life back together again, after discovering her husband in bed with another woman. She's moved, taken another job, and is trying to deal with her over-bearing mother & sister. However, things are complicated because suddenly ghosts start appearing in her home! When she receives a warning from one of them, and a vigilante demon shows up, her life takes a turn...for the worse or for the better is yet to be seen! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a fairly fast-paced, funny quick read.

I received this book as an Early Reviewer -- and only regret I didn't read it sooner. It's a story about a woman who discovers she can see ghosts, a talent borne of a messy divorce and a withdrawal from life. She manages to come to the attention of a Vigilante Demon and even more mess ensues. She's not a superhero; she's an ordinary woman who finds herself in extraordinary situations -- some of which were laugh out loud funny. I don't think I will ever think of Indian call centres the same way again....I highly recommend this book and will be looking for more.

This guy is hilarious! British humor, my favorite kind. The heroine's life is already in the toilet...and then she finds out that the dead talk to her. And THEN she finds out she's been chosen by a Vigilante Demon to be his bird-dog, so he can go after murderers and make their punishment fit their crimes. He thinks he's funny, and he likes to wing it, and he's not too worried about putting her in danger, either. Good thing she's got some cojones, even if she's never actually used 'em before. Funny, funny, violent, sweet, funny!

OMG! This book is so funny! It actually had me laughing out loud a few times. There are very few books that I can say that about. Brian and Brenda together make for some good laughs. This is a good book for those of us who like to read paranormal books and for those who do not. The demon and medium aspects of the book are more comedic than dark. It is an all around fun book! I can't wait until book #2 comes out! I did receive this book through LibraryThing's early reader program, however, I would have gladly purchased it. It was that much fun to read!

The strange thing about this ebook was that I felt like 2 separate books were combined into one. With the first few pages I thought it was getting into dark urban fantasy (which seemed strange, given the cover) which then morphed into over-the-top comic fantasy. Then, it returned to a more typical, adventurous fantasy ending. In general, I like a little dose of reality with the paranormal so the teddy bear bank robbers, the Fabio-inspired dinner party, etc., were a little much for me although there were some fantastic one-liners.Ultimately, the whole story just didn't come together coherently. There were too many things left unexplained, while some things were over detailed (the eyes looking under the house while the rest of the body was on fire, for instance). That said, I did laugh out loud a couple of times before the end.

Chris Dolley's 'Medium Dead' is a fun, quirky departure for someone who likes a bit of the supernatural combined with mystery.Brenda is a medium who has managed to connect up with a humdinger of a new 'person'. Brian is in the market for a new crime-fighting partner and Brenda fits the bill. They combine forces to have some very crazy adventures.Brenda was a lot of fun: I especially enjoyed her inner voice, who seems to be a close cousin of my own annoying internal narrator. I connected with her right away and really enjoyed the areas where she was the narrator. She brings a sense of reality to a story that is pretty far-out.Brian was a bit harder to get into and the parts where he was prominently featured often stretched the bounds of credibility to the point of silliness. These parts of the book were not the majority but did take away from the story. There was also an excessive (to me) number of typos in the book; since I have an e-book, it happens but this one seemed to be more prone than most.Overall, if you can keep an open mind, this book was a fun, different read. At least it was not your ho-hum murder mystery procedural.

Brenda's life is boring. And that's the way she likes it.Until she starts seeing ghosts, and discovers that she's a medium. One day, her doorbell rings and a man asks to use her phone. When she tries to politely refuse, he's pushed in by a gunman. And so, Brenda meets Brian, Vigilante Demon. Brian's self-assigned mission is to exact justice on people who have, for one reason or another, escaped the law.Brian asks Brenda to be his sidekick, to which she eventually agrees. The story begins as a light, humorous paranormal mystery, but eventually veers into the dark and gory, as Brenda and Brian search for a psychotic who tortures and kills young girls.I saved MEDIUM DEAD to read on a transatlantic flight, thinking it would be the perfect light read, but that was not the case. Once the two crimestoppers began searching for the serial kidnapper/killer, the plot becameconvoluted and hard to follow. Brenda and Brian's hunt was interrupted by other cases that they seemed to think were interrupting their real quest, as well as making the plot line even more confusing. Dolley has a solid writing style, and the story had a lot of potential, but it could have used a little more editing. I do look forward to reading more by this author.

I absolutely loved this book. The cover does not do it justice. When I saw the cover I thought it was going to be cheesy and hard to get through. Instead it was funny, smart and a joy to read. I was left with a lot of questions at the end. I hope that means there will be a sequel. I definitely was on the last page thinking....No! Where's the rest? :)

I enjoyed this book -- light, funny, off-beat. A reluctant medium and a vigilanty demon with a wicked sense of humor fighting crime - how could it not be fun. Looking forward to more in the series and from Chris Dolley.

This is a weird little book. Lots of suspension of disbelief with this one. But, I think there is potential there for some good story telling. Lots of strange plot twists and science fiction-y, paranormal-y plot devices. A little too outlandish for me, but there is probably a market for it.

I didn't like the beginning of this book at all, it was really grim and gross. After that it got a lot better fortunately. I did like the mystery element of this book and at times it was a really fun read. Towards the end it tended to get more grim and there was too much gruesome stuff again at times. So I'm torn on this one, there were really good parts, but also parts I really didn't enjoy. For that reason I can't give it more than two stars.

I whole-heartedly recommend the middle of this book. That part is laugh out loud funny. I only wish the rest of the book were in that same vein. The beginning and the ending are such a different tone I wonder if this book has two authors. The beginning was so serious it made me squirm, and not in the good way. The ending was too long, and obvious that the author is setting up for another book. Too many questions left unanswered: what is Brian? If he is human, how can he teleport? The main plot of the last third of the book wasn't really resolved, and left way too many questions. There were numerous typos and it has one of my pet peeves: discrete for discreet. Two totally different meanings. Pick a tone (and please let it be the funny one!) and stick with it.

I have decided that Chris Dolley enjoys writing fun books. In "Medium Dead" we are introduced to Brenda (an accidental medium) and Brian a justice-seeking, crime-fighting, (possible) demon. And the crimes they investigate and the ghosts that help them to do this.I was impressed by two things: firstly, no matter how powerful Brian is he can still be beaten. Secondly, Brenda and Brian really do give the feel of two people bumbling through and solving crimes almost as much by accident as design. I have read similar duos and we usually end up with long winded explanations of things - as Brenda and Brian are presented as complete amateurs, it is left to the reader to decide the reasons behind things.I was a little disheartened by the change in Brian's history - it is never made clear whether he is a demon, a genetic accident or something else. I was quite happy with demon Brian and felt that the "gene therapy" side- sub-plot was unnecessary and distracting. That said, Dolley has left things open for a sequel and we may receive more answers there. Definitely one to read on beach or plane or on the train for the commute.

Early Reviewer review of eBookThis was a fun, light, paranormal read. Brenda is an engaging heroine who can see ghosts. She is reluctantly teamed up as a sidekick to demon Brian. Their adventures kept me entertainted and laughing throughout. I would recommend this and look forward to more books in the future.

I really enjoyed Medium Dead. It was a funny and different book from what I am used to reading lately. I loved Brenda's character though some of her choices were questionable at times like "are you serious?" lol However, I did enjoy the book and am glad Mr. Dolley sent it to me for early review. Thanks!

I am a bit confused by this one. I liked the characters. The story was pretty good. A little hard to take seriously. I think that ultimately Brian is not a real demon but a genetically altered human. Interesting but I found him more interesting when I thought he was a demon. It is also a bit far fetched that a kick butt demon needs a sidekick to function well. I also find it a stretch that she really adds much to the mix. Add another layer that demons don't typically go around solving crimes and doing good selfless deeds. Obviously this book is fiction but the plot seemed at times far fetched and inconsistent with a natural character development. Still, I did like the two main characters. They are funny and light. Overall, enjoyable.

This was a light and fun summer-read book. The mystery was good and kept me guessing (though granted, I don't read a lot of serious mysteries). I thought overall it was an enjoyable book, though the ending felt unfinished. I don't know if the author is planning a sequel, but it definitely reads that way. I enjoyed this book, and will probably read this author again.

Brenda has been living a dull existence. Years ago she'd found her best friend in bed with her husband, and her world fell apart. She now lives in a small town far from there, mostly keeping to herself and doing her best to ignore the ghosts that temporarily show up from time to time.Everything changes when she's recruited by a Vigilante Demon who is looking for a new partner. He needs her to tell him when the ghost of someone murdered shows up so together they can mete out a twisted form of justice. He's got quite a bag of tricks to aid him that adds a great deal to the story. The first murder victim to approach her is a girl who only knows her name as Sacrifice. Tracking down her killer becomes the main focus of the book.I was immediately grabbed by the humorous antics Brian, the demon, will go through when dealing with the bad guys. Especially funny is the first situation when Brenda meets Brian. Her practice run working with Brian as a team to stop bank robbers with hostages is also entertaining. I thought the entire book would be along those lines, but unfortunately not quite.A good chunk of the book takes us in one direction, which appears to be a dead end and had me wondering why so many pages where devoted to it. Eventually it makes sense and apparently this portion of the story will continue in a sequel. Looking for information to track the killer and get that information into the hands of the police is another large segment. There are definitely bouts of humor to be had in both of these latter areas, but after being grabbed by the uniqueness of the story and those first two situations, the story starts to drag as it takes on a more serious angle. Dealing with Brenda's family adds a nice break in that area.Overall the humor and watching this tough personality buried in Brenda come out was enough to make me glad I read the book.

I admit that when I first started this book I thought it might be too clichéd and to some extent it was. That being said it had me from the first page since that was what I was expecting. It was fast paced and laugh out loud funny in places. The action was consistent and the mystery had me guessing most of the way through. It was a light, fast paced read which I thoroughly enojoyed.

I was hoping for similar to Christopher Moore. Instead, I got similar to Charlaine Harris.I was listening to the audio book. The narrator can't differentiate between an Australian and an English accent. And the story is just lame.

I have to admit, during the first few chapters of the book, I thought this was going to be one of those books I would regrettably have to leave unfinished )something that I loathe to do). The beginning of the book is ridiculously far-flung, but what really turned me off about it was the gore and vulgarity. However, I gave the book a chance, because I felt it was only fair. I'm pleased to say that after Brenda and Brian start working together, the story redeemed itself. Witty and entertaining, I found myself generally pleased by the rest of the book. The story is out there, no doubt about it. If you like plausibility, this book is definitely not for you. However, if you, like me, can make it past the questionable introduction, you may be quite pleased with the results.

I couldn't help comparing the premise to the TV show Medium because I have been marathon-watching that on Netflix. But other than the main character seeing dead people every so often, there really wasn't much else similar. Which was a good thing. This book was fast, amusing, and at times almost-but-not-quite over-the-top.I really liked Brenda, the reluctant crime-solving medium, who would probably act very much like I would have if I had to throw my hat in with a mischievous vengeance demon. Brian is a goofball, who is the catalyst for most of the almost over-the-top moments, whose comedic antics mask an tragic event in his past that is hinted at but never fully explored.A really promising start to what I hope will turn into an ongoing series.
