About this ebook

During the previous nine weeks, every Tuesday afternoon Cynthia Jenkins was given the same choice as she sits alone in the office of a powerful Swiss banker. Take control of the meeting and do her job – sell and make her target. Or she can put on the blindfold that lies on the desk and cede control to Herr Kruger who is waiting in an adjacent room. It is the latter Cynthia does, and each week she is taken further and further along a path of pain and submission. Now on their tenth meeting the relationship will reach its inevitable consummation with an explosive climax. But is it the end... or a new beginning with her Unseen Master.

    About the Author

    Prologue

But it doesn’t make sense to freeze the project. We need a new system. It’s imperative that something better is in place by the end of the year. And everyone is in agreement on the system we want.

I didn’t say freeze it, I simply requested that you tell the salesman that it is being frozen. Humour me, please. Call it a favour. You can then change your mind a day or so later – it will keep them on their toes if nothing else.

The line was cut dead before a response could be made. The new man in charge at Coates Private Bank gawped at the handset then placed it back on the base. He grumbled to himself and tossed his head from side to side in an attempt to shake off his irritation. Such surety the man had. Not even bothering to wait for consent. And of course his ‘request’ would be complied with, odd as it was. The new man in charge might be new in this job, but he had been around long enough to understand the workings of power within the tightly knit world of private banking – and power had just made a very strange ‘demand’.

Picking up the handset again, he dialled internally.

Jarvis, here, said the head of IT.

You’d better come see me, Jarvis. It’s going to be a funny old day!

    Chapter 1

Cynthia Jenkins stepped briskly out of the elevator and strode into the open plan office. She threw an accusing look around the work space and saw that there where only a few people seated at their desks.

This was good. It was mid-April, which meant six weeks remained before the end of the financial year. Six hectic weeks in which to bring in more deals and hit the ludicrous sales target that Cynthia and her team had been set – ten percent higher than the previous year, in a time when expenditure was being seriously cut back.

    Greedy sods!

The board looked for miracles from her – no other sales manager had been given such a hike. It seemed like an impossible task right from the start; even more so now with time ticking away and the forecast looking less than cheery. But Cynthia had never missed a target yet, and she had no inclination to go breaking her duck – she certainly wouldn’t go down without one hell of a fight. Her team had been told in no uncertain terms that she expected them out there rattling every possible cage to make up the numbers she passionately needed. Bums on seats sittings in the office wouldn’t do that. So the place being almost empty was good... it was very good. Yet Cynthia was still feeling decidedly uneasy.

She approached her private office with increasing anxiety. She knew it was ridiculous – she should be focused on the job at this critical time. But how could she find focus until she knew for sure? There was still a chance – it wasn’t definite. Another minute and she’d be certain one way or the other.

Her secretary, Avril, was at her work station outside Cynthia’s office, chirpy as ever – not a visible care in the world. She was laughing on the phone – a call that was quickly terminated when she noticed her boss heading her way with a grumpy expression on her face. It was obviously a personal call Avril had been taking – there were lots of those. Avril was a knock out from head to toe and she dressed to make the most of her feminine assets. She was a popular girl with a wide variety of men and a few select women as well; and one who liked to chat way too much. Her team had been surprised when Cynthia hired her, and wondered why she kept her on. To the casual observer she was a liability. But the truth was that despite her secretarial shortcomings; when things got tight, Avril responded – no questions asked – no moaning or groaning – she just buckled down and did what was needed. And she protected her boss like a tigress would her cubs – and that was priceless in demanding times. They had an understanding that had never been verbalised – an unlikely symbiosis that worked for them both. A personal call was fine, as long as she cut it off when Cynthia needed her. The guy would call back – he’d be nuts if he didn’t.

    Hi Avril. What’s happening?

Under different circumstances the same question would have evoked a ten minute low down on office gossip... but not now. And Avril didn’t need to rely on facial expression or tone of voice – she intuitively knew how to respond.

Simon needs to speak to you about the Rothschild deal; he thinks it’s good news but I’m not sure you’ll like it. Barry wants half an hour to go over the Hambros contract – what I typed up looked fine as far as dates are concerned. Robert is panicking about something or other but he’s always in a fluster before a deal gets signed, so I’d take it as a good omen. And Roland said he needs to see you as soon as he gets back from Coates. I suspect it’s the last one you really need to worry about.

Thanks for the heads up. Is that it?

A few clients called, I’ve left the message notes on your desk. Nothing urgent... Oh, and Marcia called, Herr Kruger was able to reschedule, so he is in London today after all. He can see you at the usual time, five o’clock. Naturally I confirmed.

Thanks, Avril... Give it half an hour then line the boys up. And make sure everything is clear from four o’clock onwards.

Of course. How was your morning?

    Dreadful!

Sorry! I’ll bring you in some coffee and a couple of jammy dodgers. Perhaps there’ll be a silver lining somewhere in the afternoon.

As Cynthia opened her door and stepped into her office, a smile crept over her face. Avril’s report wasn’t great – it sounded like trouble was brewing and things were slipping further, but at least she could now settle and focus on those deals and help to turn things around. Her day would have more than a silver lining to it... Herr Kruger had managed to make his weekly trip to London, as opposed to being detained in Zurich as had been expected yesterday. And not only that, his normal meeting with Cynthia would go ahead.

Cynthia sat down in her chair with all the excitement of a trainee who’d just clinched her first deal. There was a busy afternoon ahead, but she could afford a moment to bask in her anticipation... She would be meeting again with Herr Kruger – CEO of Switzerland’s most private of Private Banks – a man with huge amounts of funds at his disposal, and a much sought after prospect for Cynthia’s company. She would be meeting with the man who could sanction the business to make Cynthia’s target with ease, and today could be the day it happened.

‘I hope not!’ thought Cynthia. ‘I’ll hit the target some other way. I won’t make that sacrifice... I can’t. Not now... Not today of all days.’

Twenty million euros was the amount at stake – a figure which didn’t appear on any of Cynthia’s forecasts, or had ever been mentioned to anyone in the firm. But no one questioned why she spent so much time with this man. Getting any time at all with Herr Kruger was viewed as an achievement, and Cynthia was held in very high esteem to have regular access to such a powerful man - for this secretive individual would give audience to no one else in their firm.

It was such a defining moment three months ago when Avril buzzed through and said she had Herr Kruger on the line for her. She’d almost fallen out of her chair. Herr Kruger! On the line! Calling Cynthia in person!

It had been a call like no other she had ever taken. And since that day they had met every Tuesday at 5pm.

Cynthia felt a flush of exhilaration... and for the umpteenth time she wondered what Herr Kruger actually looked like.

    Chapter 2

The bank’s London office was in Mayfair, which spoke for itself. Not that many of their customers ever came calling, but should these wealthy individuals care to make an exception then the brashness of The City would be spared them.

Cynthia approached the building with mounting excitement and a spring to her step that belied the day she’d just endured. Her disappointing morning had turned into a nightmare afternoon. It started with Simon
