The Problem Millions of us feel strongly about a host of issues, but fail to get involved and make our views known to decision makers.

What you can do Contact your elected representatives - Whether it's on the local, state, or national level, let the people who represent you in government know what you think -- and what you expect -- concerning issues that are important to you. Write, phone, and email your mayor, governor, and state and national legislative representatives to let them know you're watching -- and that you vote.

Report the polluters in your community - Do your part to make sure that local industries comply with regulations on discharging waste into air or water, or onto land. Join a local clean water or environmental group that monitors industries and sewage treatment plants that are discharging wastes in your water or air. Familiarize yourself with the procedures for reporting violations to the local and county environmental and health authorities.

Visit NRDC Online - Check the NRDC website often. We regularly highlight urgent issues and provide tools and suggestions for adding your voice and becoming involved. At NRDC's website you can, for example:

Subscribe to receive Earth Action, NRDC's biweekly activist bulletin, by email. Earth Action will inform you about urgent environmental issues requiring grassroots action.

    Eco Activism

    You Can Beat City Hall
These community-action tips will get you started in fighting the introduction of polluters into your neighborhood.

It would be great if corporations, city officials and state governments consulted neighborhoods before selecting them to host polluting facilities like landfills, incinerators and power plants. But often they don't. Frequently, these facilities end up in the places that put up the least resistance, either because residents are unaware of the projects planned for their area, or because they don't have the money, organization, knowledge or political clout to mount effective opposition.

You can defend your neighborhood from polluters. This guide is a jumping-off point -- there are tips on how to stay informed about plans that can affect your community, on how to get involved in decision-making about how land is used in your area, and on how to organize to protect your neighborhood from polluters.
