The Triumph Of Barack Obama - Jerry Gallagher

    INTRODUCTION

In January of 2008 I discovered Blogging. I certainly had heard of Blogging and had seen my share of Blogs. Although the thought of Blogging had occurred to me, I had assumed that it was very complicated to do and far too time consuming to get involved in.

In January, 2008, I found myself checking out a website run by a Literary Agent that I had met at The Montgomery County Community College Writers Conference in 2007. The Agent had agreed to look at my Novel, The Folksingers, which I had completed writing sometime in the 70’s but had never published. I did send a copy of the typed manuscript to him although I never heard back from him other than an E Mail from him indicating that he had received it.

January, 2008 was not the first time I had checked out the Agent’s website. I had checked it out several times before and found that it contained a lot of good information on writing and publishing, including links to other writing related websites which I found interesting. What I found of interest in January, 2008 was something that obviously had been on the website the whole time but which I had never noticed before. It was a small blue and red icon at the bottom of the page which said Powered by Blogger. I clicked on the Icon and suddenly found myself on a page which invited me to start my own Blog.

"Create a Blog – Its free

Its easy and only takes a minute"

That’s what it said. I really didn’t believe it but, by god, it was true.

All I had to do was to fill in my Gmail address and fill in my password and some other information on my favorite books, movies and music and I was ready to go. I was ready to become a Blogger. Now before this I had never really thought about becoming a Blogger so now that I had a Blog I had to give it a Title. Now that I was a Blogger, what in the world was I going to Blog about?

    www.letterstoalostnation.blogspot.com

It took me about two seconds to decide what I was going to call my Blog. Years back, during The Senate Watergate Hearings in the Seventies I had begun writing Letters To A Lost Nation. My letters were addressed to My Dear America, as if America was a person, who could be communicated with. I wrote lots of letters and they gave me an outlet for my anger and disgust with the Nixon Administration. I have recently published Letters to a Lost Nation- A Watergate Chronicle as a separate book through Createspace.

I would love to claim that this idea of writing emotional letters to your country is one that I came up with on my own but the truth is that someone else thought of it. He was a French-Algerian Writer named Albert Camus’. I discovered one of his letters written to either France or Algeria in a book of essays that I found in the Allentown Public Library some years back. The technique impressed me then. I never forgot it.

Anyway, I decided to call my Blog Letters To A Lost Nation. It seemed to me in January of 2008 that writing letters to America about the Election of 2008 might be an interesting and a worthwhile endeavor.

    It certainly has been that.

Writing my Blog probably gave me more incentive to be especially interested in the 2008 Election than I might have been otherwise. I have spent a lot of time during 2008 in watching election coverage on CNN, MSNBC, C Span and The Daily Show.

My intention at the beginning of my Blog was to write in an unbiased manner about both Democrats and Republicans. As the reader will see in the chapters of this book I failed miserably in my attempt to be fair and unbiased to everyone I wrote about. I believe that even in the first few chapters I showed my true Liberal Democratic Colors.

I realize that to many who might read my book my writing will oftentimes look like the ravings of a lunatic put on paper. I apologize for that, to some extent, but the reader has to understand that as a Liberal Democrat, I wrote these commentaries with the understanding that we, as a country, were at an incredibly important crossroads past which we went down one of two roads.

One: The Republican Road, which I felt would lead us to continuing disastrous consequences.

Two, The Democratic Road, which I felt would still lead to disaster but would put into place an Administration which could and hopefully would lead us from disaster into a more Hopeful and Successful America.

Even at this point in time I don’t even want to think very hard about the deep Despair that I felt in 2000 when the George Bush Family and friends hijacked the Presidential Election with the help of the State of Florida (Jeb Bush, Governor) and the Supreme Court. I am also still convinced that widespread voter manipulation once again led to the incomprehensible win by George W. Bush for a Second Term in 2004.

By the end of January, 2008 it was clear that the two Democratic Front Runners were Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. My money was initially on Hillary but I would have been quite satisfied to accept Barack or any of the other Democratic Options, in contrast to any of the Republican Options. I must say, however, that at first Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul looked like pretty good candidates, until you dug a little deeper into their agendas.

I have always found Politics fascinating but except for a very brief involvement in the Jimmy Carter Presidential Campaign and some involvement in a friend’s campaign for PA State Representative, I tended to steer clear of party politics. Following George W. Bush’s Election I began to get more involved in the Democratic Party where I live in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. I am presently still a Committee Member of the Allentown City Democratic Committee and the Lehigh County Democratic Committee.

So I admit it. I am not unbiased and neither is my blog or my book The Triumph of Barack Obama: More Letters To A lost Nation.

If John McCain or any of the other Republicans running for President had won I would have been furious.

But a miracle happened in November of 2008. Barack Obama struck a chord in America and won not only the hearts and minds of Americans but he also won their votes and as I write this in early January of 2009 Barack Obama is on the verge of beginning his term as the President of The United States.

When I began the Blog last January I didn’t know whether I would keep it up but I intended to try to do so. I gave no thought during the Election of 2008 of turning my Blog into a book. It has only been after the Election has taken place that I have begun to realize that the story I have been writing about for the past year is a chronicle of legendary importance.

Regardless of which Democrat, Barack or Hillary, won the election, it would have been an election victory of monumental historical importance. The fact that a Democrat won after 8 unbearable years under the yoke of George W. Bush and his Republican Congressional Cohorts is to me an epic victory that bodes well
