For God and Country: Considering the Call to Military Chaplaincy (Revised Ed.)
()
About this ebook
REVISED EDITION ABSTRACT (Special Features Listed Below):
Considering the call to ministry can be a difficult process. When one senses a call to ministry outside the traditional church setting, such as the military Chaplaincy, there can be a greater deal of difficulty in discerning the call. The author writes from a Christian perspective and holds the premise that the vocation of military Chaplaincy is a high and honorable calling from God.
This book examines the call to serve as a military Chaplain in the United States Armed Forces among a group of fifteen seminary students. The majority of the participants were students at Columbia International University. Several others attended Liberty University Baptist Theological Seminary. To assist these students in discerning a call to military Chaplaincy, a three-session small group workshop was developed and held during the semester.
The goal of the students was to discern and demonstrate a clear call to military Chaplaincy as they participated in the workshop. The goal of the workshop facilitator, who also helps recruit military Chaplains, was to list and interpret the common factors and vocational motivations of the seminary students called to serve as military chaplains.
This book also explores the call to military Chaplaincy as an act of ministry that involves an initial call from God, the confirmation of the Church, and the obedience of the person who says, “Here am I, send me” (Isaiah 6:8b). The author views Christian Chaplains in the military as an extension of Christ’s ministry to all people and examines several Biblical texts that relate to the various aspects of the military chaplaincy and provide a Biblical basis for ministry.
The outcomes of this research project will benefit military Chaplain recruiters, vocational counselors, denominational endorsers of military Chaplains, and any person who is considering the military Chaplaincy as a vocation.

For God and Country - Brian Bohlman
What People Are Saying About
For God and Country: Considering the Call to Military Chaplaincy
Brian Bohlman’s book is an essential resource for those seeking fresh theological perspectives and vocational discernment regarding the ministry of a Military Chaplain. Written with the passion of a pastor who answered God’s call to take the Gospel to members of the Armed Services, this study will be valued by anyone seeking clarity on a decision to enter the Military Chaplaincy. Professional clergy, seminary students, and congregations must read and reflect upon the research of this superb book.
DOUGLAS L. CARVER, Chaplain (Major General) USA (Ret.)
Executive Director of Chaplaincy, N. American Mission Board
22nd Chief of Chaplains (2007-2011), United States Army
The dissertation and research that resulted in this book fills a big gap in current literature about discerning the call to ministry as a Military Chaplain. The expansive list of over 300 unique Chaplaincy ministry websites will be a one-stop resource for those desiring to serve in any of the major functional areas of Chaplaincy. I highly recommend this book to anyone who aspires to serve as a Chaplain.
MICHAEL W. LANGSTON, Ph.D. CAPT, CHC, USN, (Ret.)
Professor of Chaplaincy
Seminary and School of Ministry
Columbia International University
Brian’s doctoral dissertation which resulted in this book is based on the highest quality of scholarship. His research on why persons answer the call to Chaplain ministry remains ground-breaking and established him as a leading authority on this topic and related questions. Just as I routinely use his dissertation as an example for other students to emulate, I give this book my highest recommendation for any current or future Chaplain in the U.S. Armed Forces.
R.J. GORE Jr., D.Min., Ph.D.
CH (COL) U.S. Army Reserve (Ret.)
Professor of Systematic Theology, Erskine Theological Seminary
Chaplain Bohlman has undertaken an important study of the nature of call not only to ordained ministry in general, but to the specific and specialized ministry of Chaplaincy in the Armed Forces of the USA. He not only believes that the vocation of Military Chaplaincy is a high and honorable calling from God (an act of ministry that involves an initial call from God, the confirmation of the Church, and the obedience of the person), he also demonstrates the validity of the call through Biblical insights (lifestyle ministry, presence, shepherd, servant hood, pastoral care, etc.), careful exegesis of the text, and a study of persons who are discerning their own call to ordained ministry and Chaplaincy. I expect this study to be of great value to men and women of any denomination who are pondering the concept of their call to serve both God and Country as Chaplains in the military services.
ROBERT G. CERTAIN, Ch, Col, USAF (Ret.)
Former Executive Director
Military Chaplains Association of the USA
Every year thousands of men and women respond positively to a sense of
call and matriculate to graduate schools of theology and seminaries of many faiths to discover the area of ministry they are specifically called to. Some of them will answer the call to serve outside the walls of a traditional place of worship as a Chaplain. This book will greatly aid those considering the call in any of the functional areas of Chaplaincy to reflect both personally and theologically on performing or providing pastoral and spiritual care to all persons as a professional Chaplain. I heartily welcome and commend this book as an excellent, practical resource for ecclesiastical endorsers to provide to any person seeking to become an endorsed Chaplain.

Acknowledgements and Dedication
First and foremost, I want to thank God for the opportunity to complete a Doctor of Ministry degree. The writing of a dissertation often demands much time and attention away from one’s family. Therefore, the following persons must be acknowledged for their ongoing support in this academic undertaking:
My wife, Shelley, for her patience and sacrifices made over the years. My daughter, Mary Ellen, for her prayers and encouragement. My mother, Vicky, for her keen eye and editorial assistance. The staff and faculty of Erskine Theological Seminary, especially Drs. R.J. Gore, Richard Burnett, Loyd Melton, and James Hering for their wisdom, guidance, and instruction. Thank you for your dedication and devotion to working with military Chaplains over the years.
The staff and faculty of Columbia International University, especially Drs. Robertson McQuilkin, George Murray, Bill Jones, Don Hamilton, Roy King, and Rick Higgins who offered their support and encouragement to conduct this project with seminary students. I am honored that Dr. John Harvey and Dr. Michael Langston fulfilled the vision and established a robust and Chaplaincy program at CIU in 2011.
Thanks to the seminary students at Columbia International University and Liberty University who offered their time to participate in the Consider the Call Prospective Military Chaplain Workshop. Without you, this book and project would not have been possible.
My journey into the military Chaplaincy spanned over a ten-year period as the Lord used a vast array of people to help me discern my call to ministry in the U.S. Armed Forces. Therefore, this Chaplaincy book, project and dissertation are dedicated to those who encouraged me to consider the call to military Chaplaincy as well as those who will answer the call to military Chaplaincy in the future. My prayer is that God would use the words on these pages to help others who are considering the military Chaplaincy as a vocation.

Introduction to Revised Edition
Since the original e-book edition of this book was first released in 2011, I have been humbled to learn how God has used this book to help persons discern their call to serve in the Military Chaplaincy. Over the last several years, many readers have encouraged me to expand the original edition by providing additional resources to take the next step in answering the call to Military Chaplaincy.
This revised and updated edition, which is now available in hardback and paperback for the first time, is in direct response to those requests. With the rapid growth of professional Chaplaincy into many other non-military Chaplaincy settings, readers will enjoy over 55 pages in a new appendix which includes a plethora of resources for Military Chaplaincy as well as nine other major functional areas and subareas of professional Chaplaincy.
With the rise of many graduate schools of theology and seminaries offering degree programs with a Chaplaincy concentration, I added an entire new section to help prospective students ponder some very important questions when choosing a place of study. Another new section in the appendix includes website links to many Chaplaincy and Chaplaincy related organizations and associations. This section will be a helpful desk reference and resource for anyone exploring the vast array of Chaplaincy settings in North America and around the world.
Finally, it is my hope and prayer that God will continue to guide those who are prayerfully considering serving as a professional Chaplain outside the four walls of a traditional place of worship. Many Chaplains have entered this specialized field of ministry because someone took the time to listen and help them discern God’s call on their life. In like manner, I would encourage you to give a copy of this book to anyone who is contemplating the call to ministry as a Chaplain. Thank you.

Foreword
This book is an essential resource for any individual who is sensing a call into the service of Military Chaplaincy. It is clear and concise in its guidance and clarifies the steps to truly discern the calling of God into not only the military, but also the high calling of being a spiritual reference and resource to today's military men and women. As the real world operational challenges on our service members and their families become greater and greater, it is the Chaplain who will often help the Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine to have the moral and physical courage to face the rigorous demands of military life in a time of war.
The role of Military Chaplain is a very demanding one, and not for everyone. Deployments and long separations from families, the
