INTRODUCTION
One of our most important concerns in maintaining good health is to breathe air free of harmful gases and particles. Even after knowing that clean air is essential to life, we have allowed many elements in our modern life-style to contribute to pollution of our planet's precious air. Among the most important sources of air pollution are industrial wastes vented into the air, motor vehicle exhaust, and garbage incineration.
In the past decade, new laws have made important strides toward control of all three of these sources of dirty air. As a result, the air in our cities and near our highways and factories is less polluted than it was 35 years ago. But there are still areas of the nation where, because of geographical factors affecting the movement of air and because of rapid industrial growth, air pollution persists as a health problem. The battle for cleaner air is a continuous one in which all of us can participate, both by monitoring our own environment and by supporting legislative efforts to force the polluters to clean up.
Over the past decade, Americans have spent nearly $200 billion to win a minor victory in the war against air pollution. But just when we have made some progress on outdoor air pollution, there comes disturbing news. Study after study has discovered that air inside homes, schools, and office buildings can be laden with chemicals, gases, smoke, bacteria and other pollutants--sometimes in concentrations high enough to pose serious threats to health. Scientific studies have shown that the unavoidable act of breathing indoor air may cause or aggravate half of all the illnesses in the nation and may contribute to thousands of deaths a year. Indoor air pollution levels can be two to five times higher or sometimes over hundred times higher or at times thousands of times higher than outside pollution levels.
Fortunately, indoor pollution is more directly under our control and is more easily manageable than outdoor pollution, if we know the sources and how to handle them. This guide will focus on the sources of outdoor and indoor air pollution, and the measures you can take, particularly against indoor pollutants (which are often directly under your control); it will also bring to your attention the health problems of breathing unclean air.

Chapter 1
HEALTH EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
Although it is very difficult to pinpoint air pollution as the direct cause of disease, we do know that it imposes an extra burden on those who are elderly or who already have respiratory problems. This chapter will concentrate on bringing to your attention the health problems of breathing unclean air.
Effects of Pollution on the Respiratory Tract
The effects of severe air pollution are generally the result of irritant materials acting on the respiratory tract. Table 1.1 summarizes the health effects of various pollutants along with their symptoms. The most culpable substances are believed to be the sulfur oxides (with and without particulates), nitrogen dioxide, and ozone and other oxidants. Sulfur dioxide is relatively soluble in water and dissolves
