About this ebook

Detective Lennon Mordril has his faults. He drinks too much. He smokes too much. He turns into a wolf when the moon is full. Who's perfect? But he can't complain. His heightened sense of smell has fast-tracked him to the top. But when a young child ends up dead in Horseman's Alley, he's going to need more than his nose to catch her killer. My glass was empty. Not a good thing.

    Eddie, get me another.

Eddun Glocker, the bartender at the Greasy Spoon, slid a tumbler of Dragon Fire on the rocks across the bar. He had poured it half a minute ago, when he saw me nearing the end of my fourth. A good bartender, that Eddie. Knows how to keep his customers happy. And I was a customer worth keeping happy. Not that I have a drinking problem or anything, but my patronage helps keep Eddie and his Greasy Spoon Speakeasy in business.

So how's tricks, Lennon? he asked, pouring a huge tankard of Rock Mine Ale for the dwarf at the other end of the bar.

Well, you don't have to worry about it anyway, DETECTIVE, Eddie smirked. Leave it for the Footmen. You just have to solve 'em now, not stop 'em in progress.

Detective, right. I grew silent and Eddie went to collect from the dwarf.

I had been made Detective along with my partner, Ice, about three weeks earlier. It felt strange not having to suit up in the typical leather armor of the Guard anymore, if not liberating. Damn straps used to chafe.

Funny, the main reason Ice and I had gotten the promotion was something neither of us could talk about. Sure, we DID track down Jacko's little band of kidnappers and returned the son of Silverdane's mayor back to his overly comfortable bed. But it really had nothing to do with honest police work. I just followed my nose...literally.

You see, I suffer from a disease that is more than a little bit embarrassing. Ever since they found Seflin the Dark munching on that homeless man, lycanthropy has been looked upon as more than a little distasteful. The general population did not understand nor sympathize with a citizen who would be forced to turn into a wolf on full moons and then go eating the OTHER citizens. The moon's only full every three months, they figure. Lock yourself up in your home and eat your pets. Have some class.

Now this incident happened when I was nine years old; two weeks before I was bitten by the same diseased wolf that infected Seflin. At that impressionable
