    Dedication

For all my wonderful readers who took the time to say how much they enjoyed reading Cassie’s Cowboy—here’s another western I hope you like.

    Chapter One

Lacy Carmichael tugged her suitcase from the trunk of the rental car and dropped it on the ground. There were at least a dozen cars in the lot and twice as many people milling around. She raised one hand to shade her eyes and looked toward the log house at the end of the driveway. That must be the office, she thought, slamming the car trunk and picking up her bag. Saddle Creek Dude Ranch looked pretty much like the brochure promised. Log cabins for the wranglers, a main house for gatherings after trail rides, and acres of pasture dotted with sleek horses. And Christmas decorations on anything that isn’t moving.

Weary from the plane ride to Nevada, Lacy wanted nothing more than to register with the head wrangler and find her room. She had only been in the state for an hour and already swallowed more dust than she had seen in a lifetime. She fanned one hand in front of her face, dispersing the white cloud that rose up from the gravel driveway. Glancing around, she wondered if perhaps she had made a mistake in choosing the ranch for Christmas vacation. It looked intimidating, to say the least.

Well, it was either Nevada or the North Pole, she muttered, then shook her head. Being alone at Christmas time was perhaps the worse thing she thought could happen to her—until she discovered the man she was engaged to marry was already married. She gritted her teeth and dashed the thought. It only made her mad and aroused her killer instinct to think about Brad. He was a jack-off and she never should have gotten involved with him.

    Good afternoon, little lady.

Lacy pushed her sunglasses to the top of her head and squinted into the dim interior of the office. Behind a low counter at the rear of the room, she spied a tall man with a bushy gray beard.

You must be Lacy Carmichael, he said, grinning. Because everyone else has already checked in. You’re the last of the group. But don’t worry, I’m still holding a room for you.

Lacy smiled and set her bag down. The plane was delayed in Chicago. Why am I bothering to explain? He doesn’t give a shit.

Well, you finally arrived and we’re all going to see that you have a great time and a Merry Christmas, he continued. He pushed a key across the counter toward her. Here’s the key to your cabin and supper is at six o’clock. He held up one finger and shook it at her. Don’t be late.

Lacy picked up the key and turned toward the door.

After supper there’s a welcoming ceremony at the campfire. Be sure to bring a jacket because these Nevada evenings get chilly when the sun goes down.

I’ll remember, Lacy called over her shoulder.

She stepped outside the office and looked toward the row of cabins perched on the ridge behind the main building. Christmas wreaths adorned each door and green garland was strung around the wooden railings leading up to the small front porches. Lacy sighed and started toward her cabin. Everywhere she looked, Christmas decorations met the eye. There was no denying the holiday—whether she had the Christmas spirit or not.

The gravel path leading up her cabin was washed out in spots, causing her to slow her steps to keep from turning an ankle. Her new cowboy boots rubbed one foot and felt foreign on her feet. As soon as she got to her room, she intended to take them off. Being a cowgirl for two weeks might not be one of her better ideas. She chuckled and
