    Chapter 1

Special Agent Jonas Mitchell walked down the dark alleyway with a terrible feeling in the pit of his stomach. He could see the stench as much as smell it, it was stifling. Fuck. He could tell that something wasn’t right, things just didn’t feel and smell right. He kept going, cautious with every step that he took. Suddenly, he felt his left foot sink lower than his other foot slightly. Fuck. A pothole. He flicked the water from his boot and continued walking. He remembered what his partner, Special Agent Rob Castella said, Meet me in the alleyway off Mobly Street.

Well, Jonas was in that alleyway off Mobly Street and still he could see no sign of his partner. He thought it odd that he even wanted him to meet him in an alleyway but he insisted that it was important. He had known his partner Rob for five years now, they were close friends. Initially, they had a rough start together in their working relationship but things gradually improved and they were now great mates. Jonas had been in the FBI for eight years now, he hadn’t started his working life as an FBI agent though or even aspired to become one. He became an Army officer when he was 18, attending West Point and graduating to become an Infantry Lieutenant. He served six years in the Army doing a tour of duty in Iraq in 2003 during the initial invasion. It was to be his last chapter of active service, resigning from the Army at the end of that tour to be closer to his long term partner at the time. It was after a small period of unemployment and a yearning to make a difference that Jonas decided to join the FBI. Rob was from an Italian background, Rob Castella was his name, and he always use to irk Jonas when they first started working together. He used to annoy him for some reason and couldn’t really figure out why, but now he was one of his closest friends and admired partner. Jonas had walked about halfway down the alley at this stage when the stench noticeably became stronger. He knew the smell to, he wasn’t stupid. He’d smelt it many times during his eight year career as an FBI agent in the violent crime division. It was a body. It was unmistakeable to him after all these years out in the field. His thoughts began to turn from bad to worse. Where the fuck is Rob? He really didn’t want to think the worst case scenario about his partner. He still hadn’t seen him, no sign of him at all, and this was the exact alley where he told Jonas to meet him. The pit he felt in his stomach began to twist and churn, he hadn’t felt like this since he was in combat situations in Iraq. With every step he took further down the alley, the stronger the stench became. His face began to cringe now due to the strong smell. Jesus fucking Christ. He saw a clutter of steel garbage bins to one side of the alley. They were bunched strangely together. There were bags of rubbish strewn all over the place. His steps were even more cautious now. The odour was surely coming from the clutter of garbage bins and bags. As he reached the pile closely a view came into his glimpse. A body. He got closer and his worst fears were confirmed. He looked at the dishevelled face. It was Rob, no doubt about it. Jonas reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, putting it to his mouth and nose.

Ah, fuck. he muttered as the realisation began to grip him.

He wanted to reach down and touch his partner. His face cringed as he stared down at this lifeless body.

What the fuck has happened here? he asked himself quietly. Who could do this?

He couldn’t touch his body as much as he wanted to, it would contaminate the crime scene. He knew the procedure. He called it in. The police, ambulance, and some of his colleagues would be there in no time. He could hear the sirens within minutes of his call as a patrol police car arrived down the alleyway. The two cops saw the body and they began taping the area off. Not long after came an ambulance and two of Jonas’ colleagues from the Bureau. Jim Collins and Pete McCraskill.

Holy Shit Jonas, what the Hell has happened here? his friend and colleague Jim asked after seeing Rob’s body.

Jonas looked down and shook his head slowly.

I wish I knew. The pain evident in his voice.

His other colleague, Pete tapped his shoulder softly. I’m sorry mate.

He called me an hour ago and told me to meet him here, Jonas explained. He said it was urgent and that I needed to meet him at the end of this alleyway. So in the last hour from when he called me and I got here he was been killed. The stench was from the piss and shit coming from his dead body. his voice began to turn angry.

What was he like on the phone? asked Pete.

He was calm. Apart from him telling me it was urgent I meet him there was no real reason for me to suspect something sinister was up.

Fuck. Jim uttered as he listened to Jonas speak.

Killing an FBI agent. That just doesn’t go down here. said Pete.

    Nope. said Jonas.

It’s possible that it was just some homeless bum on the street to but in saying that, I haven’t had enough time to investigate the body.

Let’s just wait until Forensics get here before we start drawing any conclusions.

Forensics got there within half hour of the report that there was a dead body in the alley. A couple of the guys entered the crime scene and analysed the area. In the meantime Jim went and got coffee’s for the three of them. A call had been made to their boss, Timothy Rodriguez, he would be down soon. When Jim returned with the coffee’s, Tim just arrived.

I’m sorry about what has happened Jonas. The family still hasn’t been notified, I figured you may want to do it.

    Yeah, I’ll do it.

That got Jonas thinking about Rob’s family. His Mum and Dad here in New York. His sister and brother. They would be devastated, such a close family. Not to mention Rob’s wife and their three year old daughter. Fucking Hell. The thought of having to tell the family didn’t fill Jonas with much pleasure but he still wanted to do it. They knew him, they knew that he and Rob were close so it would be better hearing it from him. Tim, Jonas’ boss had examined the area with the forensics guys and came back to Jonas, Jim, and Pete. He had a grim look on his face, Jonas knew this wasn’t going to be a case of just some homeless bum on the street mugging and killing his partner.

It’s not good guys. He’s been murdered obviously, but rather callously. He was strangled to death, by something very thin, perhaps piano wire. We believe he was beaten first to, he has bruising on his ribs, and cuts on his body. It looks like he was kicked and punched. There are marks around his wrists, they look to have been tied together by something. This was something serious. Do you know who would want to do this to him, Jonas?

I have no fucking idea. Jesus Christ. I cant believe it. Who would want to do this to him, and why? And now I’ve got to tell his family that is how he died. He shook his head in disgust. He called me and told me to meet him in this alleyway, down the end. His voice was calm on the phone, there was no reason to suspect anything. I thought it strange he wanted me to meet him here and so soon but there was nothing in his voice to suggest something sinister was going on. I just trusted everything would be all right.

Look, go home. We will sort everything else out here. Go get in touch with the family and come in to work tomorrow when we’ll hopefully have some more information, okay? instructed Tim.

    Yeah.

Tim patted him on the back as did his other two colleagues, and he left the alleyway. As he trudged off to the exit of the alleyway he found himself struggling. Struggling to deal with what he had just heard and seen. So many questions were on his mind. It was all so strange. He couldn’t understand any of it. Rob hadn’t said anything to him about having any trouble in his life lately either. In fact, everything seemed great from the outside looking in. Great job and career. Highly respected by his colleagues. Great guy. A family man. It was unbelievable. Unfathomable. And now he had to tell Rob’s family all of this. His first point of call would be to Rob’s lovely wife, Roberta. He was not looking forward to it. For now he would have to put the many endless questions buzzing through his head behind him, and focus on delivering the worst kind of news to his wife. He was not looking forward to it.

There was a deep pit of emptiness sitting in the centre of Jonas’ stomach. He could not believe what he had just seen. He had so many thoughts whirling around his head. So many questions. He didn’t know where to start. The shock hit him like a crowbar to the stomach. It was the last thing he expected on a Friday evening, even after Rob called him to get him to meet him at such a strange location. Now he had the unenviable task of informing Rob’s beautiful wife about what he had just seen in that alley way. The worst thing was is that he knew that she would be asking him questions about it and that he just wouldn’t be able to answer them. It was tearing him up as he pulled into the driveway to Rob’s house out in the suburbs. He turned the ignition off and looked at himself in the rear view mirror for a moment. His reflection was a hollow one, Roberta would know something was up as son as she laid her eye’s on him. Jonas took a deep breath, rubbed his fingers through his short black hair, wiping the wax on his jeans. It was now or never. It just had to be done unfortunately. He stepped out of the car and trudged to the front door. He pressed his finger into the door bell, holding it down for a few seconds. He really hoped that Rob’s daughter, Vanessa would be asleep. He suspected that she would be considering what time of night it was. Jonas could hear faint footsteps on the wooden floorboards from inside the house. They gradually became louder until he could tell she was on the other side of the door. He could hear her moving the flap to the peek hole.

    Hey Roberta, it’s me, Jonas.

The door unlocked and she swung it wide open. The surprise to see Jonas at her house was obvious. She stood there with a hand
