    INTRODUCTION TO DEMONIC WARFARE

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds

    2 Corinthians 10:4

You are going to be a deliverance ministry! spoke the Holy Spirit in no uncertain voice. Startled, I wondered to myself, what in the world is a deliverance ministry? And by the end of the day I really attempted to disengage my brain from this perplexing revelation just delivered to me by God. The significance of what just transpired was beyond my ability to neither fathom nor understand. Yet, the message followed me into my dreams as I dozed off to sleep that evening.

Early the next morning I attended the pastoral prayer group that I was a part of. At the conclusion of prayer almost as an afterthought, it prevailed upon me to share with the other clergy those things the Holy Spirit had spoken to me. I confessed that at that time I had no idea whatsoever what a deliverance ministry was. But, in a state of polite bewilderment, I nonetheless asked them to hold me up in prayer whereby I might be able to receive clarification and direction concerning this very strange thing delivered to me.

As this diverse group of inner city and suburban pastors mingled in fellowship and snacks after the prayer meeting had dismissed. I turned at the sound of a sultry Louisiana voice. And there was a gentleman of narrow build, chiseled features, and southern fried tan that said, Brother, I can tell you a thing or two about the deliverance ministry. I’ve been involved with deliverance for a number of years now.

As I was to learn later Robert Ellender was a man born of an affluent family and southern aristocracy. Who took no pleasure at all with Robert’s decision to leave medical school to become a Pentecostal preacher. As he spoke to me I saw eyes that were focused and shone like coals of amber. Yet, his countenance softened in the warmth of his smile and Godly demeanor.

After a brief chat we exchanged information and promised to be in touch with one another. Thereinafter, I found myself being more than a little intrigued with this preacher who had been around the world with some of the foremost names in deliverance ministry for that time. With anticipation I looked forward to attending a teaching and mass deliverance service that Robert Ellender was going to be conducting the following week.

That Sunday Robert promptly started the teaching at 7:00 p.m. in a little storefront church whose pastor was a mutual friend of ours. Extra chairs were scattered throughout the church in order to accommodate the crowd that had gathered in a place that usually had less than forty persons in attendance. It was a hot June evening, the air was heavy and the wind still. Two floor fans had been strategically placed by the host pastor as an effort to show forth hospitality and concern for the people who ventured into Milwaukee’s inner city on this humid summer night.

Dressed in tan kakis and a yellow short sleeve shirt he walked to the makeshift roster that would hold his notes. And with simplicity and quiet ease Robert began to lead us into a world that hitherto was unknown by many. Though it is difficult to attend a sanctified church and not see a demon cast from someone’s life at least once in awhile, this enemy was now being uncovered and viewed in its natural habitat.

    The Nature of Demons

Accustomed to being unrecognized in both the mainstream secular as well as the faith community; the demonic figure or personality hides within the fabric of souls and oppresses the spirit of the redeemed through all the stations of our life walk. Where behavior, personal struggle, and self-destruction betray the type of personality inherit in the creature or creatures that dwell within us. They are the entities that live in the air around us, in our neighborhoods, schools, and every human institution. Carrying out designs that have only a single focus and that is to kill, steal, and destroy everything that belongs to God. Whose chief prize is recognized to be the wanton destruction of a life and the sentencing of a soul into eternal hell fires.

These creatures travel in packs, center themselves in specific territories, and are extremely hierarchal in their organization. The deeper manipulations that are carried out are often the product of multiple demonic factions working in concert. Whose effectiveness is enhanced by the ignorance of the church and secular communities in their failures and inabilities to recognize the devices and strategies employed by the demon spirit.

Some years later I was on an extended fast and the eyes of my spiritual discernment were further opened and I received visions on a level unknown to me before. The Lord revealed to me as I was driving down the street, transparent entities that were stationed over the marquis of stores. These beings appeared to be everywhere. Amazement gripped me as I beheld the other reality of our existence as spiritual beings that had been unknown to me prior.

That same evening as I watched an old medieval movie about swords, sorcerers and demonic princes in the realm of men, the evil presence that drove the storyline behind this particular program appeared. Where it nearly caused me to roll off of the couch and drop to my knees when the demons awesome power came like waves against me as this flood emanated through the portal of the television screen. As one pushing against the blast of a high wind I struggled and was forced to re-position myself and hurriedly change the channel because of the vileness of the spirit’s presence.

Afterwards I sought the safety of a Christian television station and some gospel singing. But, upon turning the channel my eyes were opened by the Lord once again as he showed me the same kind of spirits that were revealed to fall upon sensual dancers of this particular dance program was also falling upon these gospel singers as they did their thing for the cameras. Seductive dance moves drove the cast of this nationally prominent gospel program. Where, these only politely restrained themselves from full abandon to the demonic power driving their erotic movements. Whether professing them selves to be saint or sinner; all performed on this program whose hosts purported to represent God before their national audience.

Spirits of colossal size have been made to appear before as I saw them literally standing in the center of churches and were so tall roofs of the edifice merely encircled their belly buttons. Religious services that were so energetic many would say God surely must be in this place. But, while looking out upon the congregation from the pulpit the Lord directed me to see a dark presence in the spirit world, an absence of Christ in the midst of the congregation, and church service was what was settled for. Though many were being entertained, only a few scattered here and there had actually touched the hem of His garment.

I have seen snakes appear in vision and wrap themselves around unsuspecting victims. Causing the past pain of rejection, resentment, and rebellion to hide behind those person’s personalities and quietly become the dominant force that controlling and rippling throughout the fabric of their very lives. Childhood wounding by unloving and negligent parents have been revealed as avenues for spirits of bitterness and anger to encircle these lives injured during the times of their innocence. Not allowing their within their ability the wherefore all to enter into and maintain healthy and loving relationships.

Saints and sinners alike act out the personalities of those demonic creatures giving rise to their personal dysfunctions. Spirits of fear encamp within habit patterns of our heart. Prompting us with a need to justify ourselves often with savage rebuke while their feet are tied to the fires of loving scrutiny. A dominant trait of those justified and validated by external affirmations in the absence of positive self-worth. The sin of seeking the praises of men more than the praises of God takes root and then multiplies its self. Demonic fear orchestrates our straying deeper into the government made and founded upon lies. These entities are all the while in their attempts, seeking to undo the path and operations of the Lord’s intentions for our lives. Surrendering to the reality that God both orders our steps and life’s outcome is replaced by our yielding to what it is that would make us acceptable to those around us – or ourselves.

Coming to the knowledge of truth on these levels is an act of grace. But, is in addition a perspective that is increasingly placed under persecution as we venture deeper into the things of God. We being forced by necessityto gaze the more intensely on the truth of His word instead of the foolishness that comes against our minds. Knowledge and insight gained by time, experience, and seeking the face of God is the fundamental requirement for moving in these dimensions and employing the power born of meaningful understanding.

Sophistication of demonic methods is contingent on which spirits are involved. While before the Lord in prayer I remember an act of childhood vandalism at age four. Reliving the experience in vision the Lord points out to me a black cloud suspended over the place of my deed. And then I see that cloud literally pour down into my life. In another instance almost simultaneously I am shown how the devil sent older boys to pollute and defile my life. Whereby, orchestrations of unclean spirits brought about overwhelming rejection that followed me throughout my days. Resentment, rejection, and pride had been introduced into my life from early childhood. Insidious designs from hell were planted through wounds of my spirit and doorways from my sin.

Spirits are personalities that attack our imaginations, exalt themselves against the knowledge of God, and fuel thoughts that defy obedience to Christ; thereby, causing man to think evil continually. Strong in their will power these after having been cast out, will return and bring seven more wicked than himself back into the life of the host. Communicated through the mouths of their victims prior to being cast out, are the emotions and thoughts of the evil entity. Where they will cry out and plead that the deliverance session would cease or that Christ will not torment them before their time. Having self-awareness their preference is asserted and the demon will cry out and seek who or what should be their next host.

Tormenting of souls, driving compulsions, demons appearing and taking the form of ghost, and acts of the supernatural are all within the venue of this realm of darkness. Garnering for themselves an air of mystique and social acceptance as is evident by the open practice of witchcraft, humanism, and cultic symbolism in the mass media. Thereby creating an environment for which these entities can foster recruitment, diffuse impact of their presence and work, along with perpetuating curses brought about by open rebellion to God’s word.

Demonized behavior translated in scripture as possession is introduced and embraced through sins of refusing to do God’s will, unforgiveness, harboring bitterness and anger, sexual misconduct, and unclean alliances. These along with a myriad of other actions provide the foundation for satanic seeds to multiply themselves through the law of sowing and reaping. Doorways for the powers of darkness to gain entry into our lives through our father’s sin are repeated by the sons and daughters of men, and the curse goes on.

When first coming into the Pentecostal experience about thirty-five years ago my holiness friends were teased by just about everyone. The early pioneers attempting to live a spirit driven life were called holy-rollers, sanctified folks, and any number of derogatory endearments by many. Seen as ridiculous, ignorant, unbelievable and viewed in basic astonishment were the things said to many even until this day, about these tongue toddlers to some of those who were fortunate enough to attend schools of theology in the lofty cordons of higher education. Relative newness of Holy Ghost power in many circles brought with it any number of weird portraits of what spirit filled was all about. And in that environment seductive spirits of darkness mystified and convinced many that whatever appeared in the church as supernatural absolutely was of God.

In the church world of today where many believe that they are already mature after being saved a few months or a few years. Rush into ministry and charge demonic fortifications without fear. Whereby, resulting in the wholesale lying on of hands by anybody and everybody and unknowing congregations submitting to ministry by the unclean minister, with transference of evil spirits becoming commonplace. These going on and spiritual pollution moving undetected by unlearned eyes of leadership without spiritual vision. Prophecies from spirits of divination are embraced by the immature. Antics from the mentally ill are disguised and go unseen by the many blind guides. Doctrines of devils and seducing spirit weave principles that guide the culture of entire churches. It is in this environment that the inability to endure sound doctrine gains acceptance and demonic systems are multiplied.

Deliverance ministry is not for those Christians who are immature. There must be a time and a season when one must wait upon this ministry. Not being entangled with the cares of this world, the lust of the flesh, lust of the eye, and pride of life is central. Childish things must be first put away or we will find ourselves running naked down the street or walking around looking like a zombie if we enter into demonic warfare without being lead of God. Knowing the voice of God is a product of maturity and soberness of mind coupled with humility.

Prayer to Usher in the Deliverance Anointing

After sitting through Robert’s teaching that week the first steps into a lifelong battle commenced. The instructions of that gathering moved from the sermonic to the practical. Mass deliverance or the religious exercise where God is petitioned to initiate an anointing or move of the Holy Spirit that would drive demons, from not just one person but potentially everyone in the house needed to be respected as a certain Christian reality.

The prayer for any deliverance session was taught to me personally. It began by giving thanks to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Asking Him to cover and protect this house, and everyone in it and everyone who comes inside these walls with the blood of Jesus. We would then ask the Lord to allow the blood covering over our families, loved ones, over every family in attendance of the mass deliverance service, and everyone who comes inside the place of ministry.

Petitioning is then made that the blood be over all our possessions, homes, vehicles, jobs, business affairs, personal relationships, our churches, our health, and over any other place or thing in our lives where the devil would attempt to steal, kill, or destroy. Understanding that evil spirits have a tendency to linger or confine themselves to specific geographic areas. Prayers that the blood of Christ cover individuals in attendance at every future meeting held are also made.

Attention is thereafter directed to God and petition made the Lord would allow angels be dispatched and made to encamp themselves around the place where ministry is being held. Request that the Lord have those angels to assist us in the deliverance ministration is also made. Thereafter, we confess the need to have the angelic beings drive the demons to a place that He has provided. Whether the evil spirits may be resident, summoned from beyond the immediate area, or that they try to join with the spirits of spectators and ministers by transference, we speak against demonic reinforcement.

We pray God that Jesus would come down and be in our midst to oversee and direct all services and everything that goes on in the house of the prayer. We pray for the manifestation of the anointing for casting out demons along with the gifts of the word of knowledge, discerning of spirits, miracles, faith, and healings.

Our hearts are then directed as we turn attention to repenting and asking our Father God for forgiveness of our personal sins as well as for the sins of our forefathers even now affecting our lives. Pleadings that God would forgive every involvement associated with the occult and our rebelling in defiance of His power. Forgiveness from every sin of spiritual uncleanness entering our lives through the powers of this strongman of rebellion, is pleaded and now resisted for it challenged the authority of God throughout the issues of our lives. Not only do we ask forgiveness for ourselves but forgiveness for anyone that we pray for during the time of ministration.

Pleas are offered up as we cry out for the Lord to forgive our every sexual sin and the defilement of His temple, our body, and pardons us from the sin of Cain--the vagabondówhich is unforgiveness and the rendering of evil for good. We acknowledge that the sin of the vagabond is that which did despised the goodness of His character as we spat in the face of our benefactor with painful treachery. Appeal is made that the Lord would place super charged angels in the life of all to cast out the spirit of the vagabond.

Prayers for deliverance from every sinful stain attached to our lives continue in the mighty name of Jesus. Renunciation from our every involvement with sexual sin, the occult, sins of rebellion, and the sins of the vagabond (Cain) is set forth. According to the scripture these renunciations declares our decision to come out of the hand of darkness and walk into the newness of life.

Prayers based upon unclean associations and liaisons are next entered into. By the power of God in the name of Jesus we break the power of every curse and every ungodly soul-tie associated with ancestral and personal sins of sexual immorality, rebellion, unbelief, occultism, and unforgiveness. Finally, avenues for demonic access to our lives who are the ministers as well as those receiving the Lord’s ministrations of deliverance are supernaturally severed and the doorways created by our submitting to unclean powers and transgression the will of God are closed by grace.

    My First Deliverance Service

The heavens then open up in respect to the prayer delivered to the church by God and power with anointing sufficient to break the yokes of demonic powers is released to move freely throughout the edifice. Those who are positioned to lead the deliverance ministration are lead by the Spirit of God to see the face and movements of those dark forces being uncovered. Moving thereafter in the very power and unction of God we begin commanding the devil to come up and out of its host as we invoke the name of Jesus and summon the release of his blood. We call out by name every spirit that is revealed by the Holy Ghost. We demand that spirit to get out, to move out now. We cry out and command the blood of Jesus to break the creatures power. It is proclaimed that this individual belongs to Jesus. What follows is not for the faint of heart.

There are many who hold to and believe that a Christian cannot have a demon. But as I look upon at the evil dysfunction, broken relationships, greed, infighting, rebellion against spiritual authority, etc. in the church. I can only conclude that if we can’t have demons, a demon most certainly can have us. Scriptures points to the place evil maintains its decisive holds in our lives lends provides certainty of our plight as believers, who are required to live out their lives in the temple of their flesh, while striving to serve an almighty and holy God.

Sometime later I would see as I moved into mass deliverance that the anointing for casting out demons would fall upon an entire congregation. But, because of self-righteousness, ignorance, fear, pride, or what have you it rolled off the people like they had on non-stick coating. Or, that there would be people I’d meet who had become so accustomed to the power that a demon provides in their personal relationships, they simply did not want to give the demons up and sat in stoic opposition to us and God.

Nonetheless, the night of Robert’s deliverance service was nothing less than wild. It started out with the same deliverance prayer that he prayed whenever he would minister in that manner, invoking the anointing from God to cause the unholy spirit to show itself and is subsequently cast out. I would later see God honor this prayer in other deliverance ministries and private sessions around the country. This was the same prayer that Robert learned from Pastor Win Worley, a pioneer in the area of deliverance ministry revelation. But, tonight I was completely fascinated by everything that transpired and its electrifying impact upon us all.

Throughout the years I have witnessed God set souls free from the hands of darkness and unclean spirits. These episodes were isolated and far in between for the twenty years I had been hanging around the church. But, this was the first time that I was given to see the Lord did indeed allow His people to command and invoke the anointing of the Holy Ghost for this specific purpose.

A shriek rang out and pierced us until chills ran down our spines. One woman fell on the floor. Across the room the voice of some foreign being spoke out of the mouth of another gentlemen and he screamed and hollered. Within a moment bedlam rampantly took hold of the moment. And persons who sat quietly and dignified throughout an entire week were suddenly finding themselves rolling around on the floor spitting up. Eyes that were wild and glassy peered at those of us who had not been chosen by God to experience the wonder of deliverance.

Robert, like an emergency worker during the height of a perilous storm began to call out the names of spirits. Resentment, rebellion, anger, bitterness, perversions along with every other thing that he was commanded by God to come against was bombarded by the power and move of God’s Holy Spirit. While at the same time he directed us who ministered with him at the time, how to respond to those who had been floored by the supernatural confrontations demonstrated on that evening.

All of the spiritual gifts were in operation that night as the body of believers moved in Godly concert and sought to help those who were wrestling with their personal unclean spirits. Maturity in Christ was an absolute requirement. In order to receive direction from the Lord, discern the lies of the entities that spoke through the mouths of those being delivered, and to maintain focus. Inasmuch as so many of the demons being cast out also worked in concert amongst themselves as they emanated spiritual power or pressure against the minister’s involved in deliverance sessions. Thoughts would become disrupted, pleading and cries from the demon distract from the ministers attempts to communion with God, wild thrashing and hollering from the one being delivered caused fear and panic for some. While all of these were in actuality very effective counter-measures flowing from the mind and powers of darkness.

The deliverance session can be much further complicated when there is active sin in the lives of the deliverance minister. In that these devils will tell your personal business. Or, you will think that you are hearing from the Lord, when in fact the spirits that dwell within us band together to resist our efforts through signs and lying wonders. All that goes along with being immature in the Lord makes us vulnerable to spirits being transferred from the person being set free and then they turn and would enter into us. Supernatural strength of mind, body, and spirit must be imparted to those serving in the capacity of exorcist. Demonic pressures against the mind will cause you to end the session because of weariness. Prolonged deliverance services will cause doubt to come in and rest assured, your goose becomes cooked. For the warfare comes against our minds and challenges our ability to maintain focus and belief that God is with us and the devils will obey.

Sometimes deliverance takes on added dimensions in that you do not know how that demon came into the life of the oppressed. Our tendency is to apply formulas so that we can control that which God is actually required to do. We move according to pattern as we say things like, Take two aspirin and call me in the morning if you’re not feeling better. These devices are found to be deeply successful even against experienced deliverance workers but most certainly for those who are not discerning of the voice of the Lord and do not have the patience to see a session to its conclusion.

Forgiveness is sometimes a necessary first step for a particular individual to enter into prior to their receiving the deliverance. Discovering that truth through unction of the Holy Ghost and persuading that person to do so may be the miracle for the evening. We must enter into every session with an open heart to receive what it is the Lord would have us to do.

Deliverance has ebbs and tides in the spirit dimension. Where, the spiritual gifts of worship, tongues, laying on of hands, or speaking forth commands may all be appropriate and called for in the deliverance session. Simple reading of scriptures directed to the individual who might be in the throws of the powers of light and darkness wrestling with their souls as the candidate stares
