      How did it get like this? Max juggled his keys around in his hand as he walked up the stairs to the front door. Since Max had moved in last January, the little house was no longer just Theo's home, but his as well. Yet, for the first time since the move, Max was reluctant to go inside.

      Theo hadn't spoken to him beyond noncommittal grunts in the past two days, making the house feel very small and confining. In contrast, when he went out to his family's farm, it felt vast and welcoming, which made it harder to face Theo's dim, quiet house.

      But Max did go in, hanging up his jacket and keys.

      Theo, I'm home.

      This got him silence. The TV wasn't even on. Max frowned and headed for the closest source of light -- the kitchen. It was empty. He looked at the small coffeemaker
