    Chapter 1

I don't know, what do you think? Emma asked. Well, I do like it, but it is an old house, it probably will need lots of work, but I love the outside, it has character. Dante said. Well it has plenty of room if we ever decide to start a family. Emma said. Dante looked at Emma with a gleam in his eye and said, Honey we've talked about this, it's just not the right time. Emma quickly entered Well, I'm just saying in case we decide. She said with a giggle. Dante quickly spoke up and said changing the subject. We will need to get a riding mower for all his property. Dante turned and looked at the real estate agent and asked, How much land did you say goes with this house? Well, let me look at the paperwork here, I forget what I told you. HMMM, looks like 4 1/2 acres. Jacob said.

Jacob was the only real estate agent in the small town of Matthews, Alabama. The town's population was only 1,126. It was a small quaint town of mostly senior citizens who could spin a yarn a mile-long. The outskirts of town were bordered by farmland, in the center of town they had a huge barn where they held auctions, and dances. The Main Street was lined with little mom-and-pop shops. Sidewalks were cracked and old, but there wasn't one resident that you could pass without a friendly greeting. There was only one church at the edge of town. It did not look like the church had been used in years. The windows were covered in dust, and the roof looked as if it needed a lot of repair. There was a small café on the corner of Schneider and Colton Street. The café was called, 'Misty's Playback'. It was like a small hamburger shop and the area around the café always smelled wonderful. They also served rib eye sandwiches, coleslaw, potato salad, spaghetti, and a variety of other tasty treats, all the good foods that little towns are known for.

I really like this one Dante and it has so much character, so much land, and we don't have a neighbor for what, a block and a half on either side? I know Emma, but I'd just like to see if there is anything else that might be attractive and suit our needs. Emma gave Dante a blank stare. She felt so strong down in her bones that this was the perfect house for them. Okay, can we make a deal, look at me Dante, can we make a deal? Can we agree we only look at one more house and then we will pick from the three we have seen? Emma asked like a little girl, with her sad eyes looking up at Dante. Dante took his pointer finger and gently flicked Emma's nose and smiled. Okay, I guess, one more and we will sit down tonight over dinner and decide which one we like, okay? Emma looked up from the floor into Dante's face, and smiled the smile that Dante loved. Emma had a smile that Dante could not resist, and every time Emma would smile Dante would melt. Emma realized she had the power over Dante and tried not to use it too often because he would feel like he was whipped. He had mentioned that to Emma one time in a conversation, to which she had promised she would try not to use her smile on him and her feminine wiles.

Jacob, I hate to do this to you man, but is there another house we could look at? Dante said. No problem Mr. Fischer, I'm always prepared, in fact I have two more you can look at if you want. We have a three bedroom bungalow if you would be interested in one, or we have a rather old-style colonial. Jacob said. Dante and Emma looked at each other and Dante shrugged his shoulders. You pick my dear; I want you to be happy. Dante said to Emma. Well if you wanted me to be happy Dante, we wouldn't be looking at another house. I love this house, it has character, I can feel the people who lived here before and they were happy. Dante looked at Emma, and said, Woooo. You make it sound chilling and scary. Emma lightly slapped Dante on the arm and said, Jerk! Dante and Jacob both laughed and then Emma began to giggle. I guess the colonial is the one we'll see Jacob. Sounds great, just follow me. Jacob said.

The three left the house, on their way to check out one more residence. Jacob turned and started walking backwards on the sidewalk and said, I think you all will love this next house, it's more modern and has a basement that is already finished. We will see, Dante said. Jacob, Emma and Dante all got into their vehicles, Jacob pulled off and Emily and Dante followed. The house was only four blocks away at the north side of town. As they pulled up in front of the house, Dante made some sort of comment of, Now this is what I'm talking about. Emma let out a sound of distaste for the house. Dante tapped on Emma's left leg, and asked her to give it a chance, she might like this house. Jacob walked back to Emma and Dante's car on the driver side and smiled. So, what do you think? He asked the couple. I personally think it's really cool, said Dante. Now, on the other hand I'm not so sure. Come on let's go take a quick peek, come on Emma you don't know, you might like it. Jacob stated. The couple got out of their car and followed Jacob up to the front door. While Jacob was digging the keys out of his pants pocket, Dante and Emma were giving each other glances. His was a smile, hers was a frown. Emma whispered to Dante, I'm not going to like it, I love the other house."

The doorknob turned, they entered the house. Wow, I like this. Dante said. Dante walked to the middle of the room, held out his arms, and slowly spun in a circle. Honey, how could you not like this, there is so much space. Just remember, Emma said, it has to be filled up with furniture. Emma gave Dante a smirk, and Dante laughed. Let's check out the other rooms. Jacob said. They followed Jacob around the house, Dante liked what he saw, but Emma's heart was set on the Victorian house. When they were done looking through the house, Dante told Jacob, as Dante looked at his watch, that he and Emma were going to go to dinner, and discuss the houses, and pick the one they wanted. Dante told Jacob that he would call him when their decision was made that evening. As the couple was leaving, and Dante was locking the door behind them, Jacob told them that he did have one other couple looking at the same houses, and that he would like Dante and Emma to get
