Why a Book of Tips?
In writing this book of tips, I have had to overcome my own reluctance to write such a book. You see I don't believe that a book of tips is enough to make someone an effective speaker. Why try to remember a whole bunch of tips, when it would be more productive to learn to speak in public properly? I have always seen the tips approach a little like learning to drive by reading a book of tips.
I have been convinced by others, that many people do want and need tips, that help them through various situations. These can be heckling, animosity as participants do not want to attend your talk, they are forced by superiors to attend, jokes, keeping the audience attention, not dying of embarrassment when a projector fails. The list is endless.
To do something well it is necessary to learn the skills appropriate for the task. Undoubtedly, this is true; however, occasions do occur that require almost immediate action. In such circumstances, it is impossible to go learn the skills required in such a short time.
