About this ebook

“You can’t change the past... no matter how much you want to.”

If only Allie Collins could go back to that tragic day one year ago, perhaps she could escape the guilt that haunts her. In reality, there was no altering her cousin’s death or the role she played.

Then she meets Damien Michaels, a dark-haired stranger on a dirt bike, who seems to watch Allie and know more about her than he should. Veiling his own secrets, including a mysterious scar and tattoo, Allie knows she shouldn’t trust him—especially as she digs up a past Damien desperately wants to forget. She also doesn’t believe in summer romances, yet she finds her attraction to him growing beyond his striking grey eyes. Too late, Allie discovers he is hiding a dark past that is far from over, endangering her life and those she loves.

*I received a complimentary e-book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*

As the other reviewers have stated, this is a very tragic and heart wrenching story. Towards the end I felt emotionally drained! Although the story is centered around a 17-year old girl, it comes off as genuine and not filled with teenaged-angst. Erica Kiefer has a knack for writing and character development. I look forward to her future works.

This book was just okay for me. I have had a review copy of this book for over 4 years but never felt compelled to actually read the book until now. I must say that I am happy to finally be able to mark this book off of my list of books to read. I found this to be a pretty quick read that held my attention but it was never the kind of book that totally grabbed me. My feelings are pretty mixed about this book. I think one of the main things that I didn't care for in this book was the fact that it was another teen romance featuring a love triangle. I am not usually a fan of love triangles. In the case of this book, Allie has two boys falling for her. Aaron is always there to support her and gets her through a lot of tough times. Damien is the dangerous older guy that drives a motorcycle and has a few stalkerish behaviors. Guess who she picks? I think that Allie's behavior was another major hurdle for me to overcome with this book. I am the mother of a teenager and not a teen so I do realize that I am probably not the target audience for this story but Allie was too much at times. She kept telling everyone that she was going off to college soon so she could make her own choices. Of course her father was telling her what she needed to do because on her own she wasn't doing too great. I had a few other issues with the story. I thought that Damien's past was way to easy to figure out. We do eventually get more details but even then I thought everything seemed a little too perfect. Allie has a moment towards the end of the book where she suddenly remembers something that she had forgotten for the past year and it just felt really odd. I also could not believe that Allie's father and step-mother never addressed her step-brother's behavior towards her. He was terrible to Allie and then suddenly they started getting along. There were some things that I did like about the story. Allie had a lot of grief and guilt to deal with from an event in the past. It has obviously had a great impact on her life and I did like seeing her work through those emotions. Allie and Aaron's friendship was a high point of the book. Aaron was probably my favorite character in the story and I liked his connection with Allie. While the big action scene at the end of the book seemed far-fetched, I still found it to be rather exciting.I do think that a lot of readers will like this one a lot more than I did. I was entertained by the story even when I was questioning a character's behavior. I am glad that I read this book even though I feel like it was a pretty forgettable read.I received a digital review copy of this book from Clean Teen Publishing via NetGalley.

This book takes a look at the emotions that linger after a traumatic event. The main focus of the book is Allie, she is struggling with the guilt she felt after her younger cousin drowned. An accident where Allie was present and feels like she could have/should have done more to prevent it. She is the survivor, but feels like the villain.Allie is drawn to a young man who rides a dirt bike. He seems to be following her, there is something about him that makes her want to discover more of his past. He has issues of his own that he tries to deal with, but refuses to talk about. The two of them become the perfect therapy for each other. They bond over mistakes from their past and find hope in a better future. The book takes a few plot twists and turns that lead to a greater understanding of the characters. One idea that I loved in the book is that people make assumptions from a small portion of the truth. Assumptions can lead to untruths. The book has situations of many assumptions, some are devastating to the characters. It also deals with change and the ability that someone has to heal. The book has kissing and violence.

This is a highly emotional, sad, and tragic story, but it is also a story that shows great growth by the characters. It is filled with twists and turns and it will keep you entertained all the way through.

I snagged a copy when this book was available as a 'Read It Now' on Netgalley.

This novel was in a recommended reads email from Netgalley, the blurb sounded good so I snagged it. After a few pages, I read some reviews, and admittedly thought I probably wasn't going to be very impressed with this one. I was wrong. Turned out to be a very good read.

My only real issue with it was the plot was completely predictable. Two damaged teens with troubled pasts coming together and working through the obstacles to resolve things and fall in love. In spite of that, the novel was exceptionally well written. The narrative was quite moving in certain parts. The characters were believable (even jerk-ass step brother Nick who I disliked intensely showed some growth as a character)

The story is told from the point of view of Allie, who feels responsible for an accident that involved her little cousin Maddie. Her recently remarried father drags her off on a summer vacation to "help" her move on from the incident before she starts college in a few months time. She vacations with her annoying stepbrother Nick, Nick's friend Aaron, stepmom Clara, her dad and her friend Brooke. She meets Damien, a hunky mysterious local boy. Allie is very likeable, if a little stubborn and selfish at times, but at least there are some good reasons as to why. She has an iffy relationship with her Dad, and her step mom is not a horrible character, she was quite a nice lady. Damien was a smooth talker, with a hidden past, and some of the typical "bad boy" characteristics - stubborn and mysterious and manages to conveniently show up at the right moments.

    ***very mild plot spoilers****
The relationship between Damien and Allie is slow growing, their feelings for each other develop throughout the story. He brings out feelings Allie hasn't dealt with and she warms to him. Despite some a grizzly local tale about a tragic fire involving a dead family and the son who survived Once the grizzly story is mentioned its obvious where the plot is going. But I found I didn't mind the predictable plot because the story was so well written.

One thing I liked particularly was when certain characters realised there were issues, talked about them and tried to figure a logical way to deal with them. The story was wrapped up nicely as well. One or two loose ends, but I figure its things that can be left to a reader's imagination.

So overall, a very enjoyable read highly recommended to anyone who likes YA contemporary romance with plenty of feels.

This is a book written for the young adult audience. The heroine, Allie, is having difficulty with her guilt in the accidental drowning of her young cousin. Her father, who is remarried, has her accompany him and his new family back to the resort area where the death occurred in the hopes that revisiting the scene will help alleviate some of Allie's guilt. Allie brings her friend, Brooke, and her stepbrother, Nick, brings his friend, Aaron. There is some adjusting in the relationship between Nick and Allie, as they learn to become step-siblings. Allie runs into Damien, a young man with a troubled past. Both are suffering because of how their actions have affected others, but Damien's past still has some serious issues that need to be settled and which end up placing them both in danger. In the end, who will emerge as the true hero? I did have some problems with this story. The fact that the gang was taking money from Damien but then stopped after the fire did not seem credible. It would seem more likely that they would continue extorting him, especially since he was worth so much. Allie's age of seventeen would seem to have made her parents more restrictive than they were, while making her eighteen would make their semi-hands off approach more credible. I do appreciate the fact that the romance was kept clean and the message that what we do affects not only ourselves but others. All in all, a book teens may enjoy with enough suspense and romance to keep them interested. I have not been compensated in any way (other than being given a copy of this book to review) and my opinion on the book is entirely my own.

I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. I generally don't read the description of a book to closely; I just scan to see the general consensus of other readers. This was one where the reviews are all over the place. I decided to take a chance and go ahead and read it. I'm glad that I did. This was fast-paced, intriguing, and exciting. At the beginning of the book Allie isn't happy with where she is, and she is haunted by the tragedy that happened last summer. Her dad is trying to bring her out of her shell and force her to enjoy her vacation. She just doesn't want to be there and she resents everyone trying to cheer her up. Then she notices a mysterious boy who seems to be following her around. (At this point in the book I was rolling my eyes and hoping that I wasn't going to regret choosing this book). She confronts him and there is just something about him that draws her out. They start hanging out and she ends embroiled in his past. And boy does he have a past!I would definitely recommend this to teens looking for an exciting and somewhat romantic read

Wow. This is unputdownable. Yes, I know that's not a real word, but it's the only one that describes this book perfectly.

A fast paced book, full of action, surprises and twists. I honestly could not predict what was going to happen in this story. It had me crying, gasping out loud, and I was even caught talking out loud to the book.

I know it's a great book when I talk, like say "NO", when something shocking happens. No spoilers here, but it's a wonderful example of the genre. I hope there will be more.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I don't understand why so many people love it. It needs a lot of work.

It started to get interesting around chapter 5. The first few chapters were jumpy and never explained anything.Where are they? Why are they doing that? Who are these people? I was lost for a long while. What was the point, seriously.

Also, why did it take ten more chapters to bring up the burning house again. If this is going to be a regular fixture in your book, one of the characters needs to mention it here or there. If I knew this Allie, I would assume she had no interest in abandoned buildings, computers, or looking up history. So why is it all of a sudden, 15 chapters in, her life's purpose?

My hazel eyes.... Over and over and over. I get it. I got it. What is this obsession with eyes? I don't need to know everyone's eye colour. God. Harry Potter's eyes are the only ones I care about. It wasn't repeated every 30 seconds and I still know they're green. This is probably the part of the book that bugs me the most. I don't care about every characters eyeballs. Who cares? It was more then likely just filler to get to a specific word count.

The house should have been repeated more, not the goddamn eyes.

I also wish the scene with the canoe had gone a different route. Would have made the whole story a wee bit more interesting.

I feel bad for Aaron. Nick is a dick. The story is okay. Nothing amazing.
