About this ebook

Vichit is a handsome lad who spends his day selling ice-cream on Dongtan Beach. Steve, a young Englishman, is a regular visitor to the beach and dreams of holding Vichit in his arms. He knows it's an impossible fantasy; he's under no illusion that his banter with the boy could ever achieve success.

Yet while a dream persists, there must always be hope.

Khun Steve

I was born in Lewes, East Sussex in the United Kingdom and educated at Eastbourne College and the University of Warwick. After graduating, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant and persevered with a professional career in London until the economic collapse in 1989, a life-changing event for me, following which I packed my bags and headed for Thailand. In Bangkok, I worked for a while as a fashion model, a television extra, a news presenter for Radio Thailand and a teacher before securing a permanent job in the Bangkok office of an international accounting firm. I loved my new lifestyle so much I stayed for ten years. For most of my time in Bangkok, I lived in King Mansion in Sathorn Road, a rather notorious hotel sandwiched between the Australian Embassy and Alliance Francais. The time I spent in Thailand was the happiest period of my life. It was fun, exciting and the sexual exploits were quite outrageous compared to life back in the UK.I hope my short stories give you a flavour of what I got up to.

Dongtan Beach makes up a short stretch of Jomthein bay, which lies a few miles south of the seaside resort of Pattaya in Thailand. I had the good fortune to visit Pattaya frequently in the 1980s on holiday and I worked in Bangkok throughout the 1990s. During this period of my life, I considered Dongtan to be one of the most tranquil and glorious beach destinations imaginable.

Thailand has experienced a huge amount of development since my first visit, and Dongtan is no exception. My hope is that this story conveys the essence of the beach's appeal at a time before developers were given free reign.

    You want ice-cream, khrup?

The voice was faint, hardly making any impression on my consciousness. It was no more than a background noise, far off in the distance, mixed with all the other familiar and comforting sounds of Dongtan Beach. There was the gentle lapping of waves breaking on to the sandy shore; the hum of a solitary jet ski crossing the bay; hawkers walking by, jangling armfuls of beads and jewellery; boys shrieking as they played an improvised game of volleyball near the water's edge.
