    “You didn’t even speak up,” Mr. Cortez chastised, removing his cufflinks and setting them down on the table. “You hung back and didn’t say a word. Why are you here if you’re not going to participate?”

    “I – I just was too nervous,” she explained, knowing it was a pathetic excuse. She watched as he began methodically rolling up his shirt sleeves. “Nobody would have listened to me anyway.”

    “Is that what you think?” He put his hands on his hips a moment and shook his head. “You are mistaken, Miss McGovern. You must participate, you must speak up.” He turned the chair to face her and sat. “Now it is time for your punishment.”

    “I understand,” Theresa said. “What is it?”

    He gestured. “Come here and kneel down.”

    Startled, Theresa hesitated. “What?”

    “Come over here and kneel down,” the consultant repeated firmly. “You will lay across my lap. Now!”
