    COSMODOTS: 01-SUSAN SPHERE

Susan Shuford’s mind wandered for a few moments, and she was startled as her ten-year-old twin brother, Brian, ran toward her. His mouth hung slack, and his blue eyes were opened wide, as if he was frightened.

Where are you going? she asked him, as she stood up. He ran past her. Hey! she shouted to him. What’s wrong with you? Where are you going? Where’s Heidi?

In the distance in front of Brian, three thin, colorful trees stood together in a triad formation–one blue, one yellow, and the third one in front, a vibrant red. The thin foliage swung slowly in a triangular formation. The trees reminded Susan of skinnier versions of palmetto trees back home in South Carolina. She ran toward her brother.

Those weren’t there a minute ago, she said. Where did they come from? Brian! I’m talking to you! she shouted again. With her faster pace and slightly longer legs, she caught up to him and grabbed him by the arm, stopping his advance. Why are you running toward those trees? What’s wrong with you?

He groaned and pulled against her, as he pointed to the trees with his other hand. A thin, gossamer lightning bolt passed from the top of one tree to another, and all three sprung vertically to attention. A force pulled on the children which caused their feet to slide forward. Susan’s skin tingled from the sensation, and she screamed as she was pulled ahead while trying to hold her brother back, away from the flickering trees. Her ponytail became undone as her brunette hair straightened in the direction of the attractive force in front of them.

What’s happening! Susan screamed. She fought to hold on to Brian’s arm as they both were pulled forward.

With a whirring sound, a tunnel opened between the children and the trees. The white Guide dot, half Susan’s size, floated out. As the tunnel closed, he greeted them.

Vlooweeyu! Here you are! he said with a smile.

She screamed at him. Help us! Something’s wrong!

The dot turned around and his eyes widened in terror. Great Dot! he shouted. A Vorpin! He spun around the children and grabbed Susan’s other arm, pulling her backward. She lost her grip on her brother’s arm, and Brian ran toward the trees.

You pulled me away! Susan screamed at the Guide, who did not release his hold on her.

He pulled the girl with all his strength away from the trees and away from her brother who entered the grove. The surrounding trees stood more than three times Brian’s height. A low series of tones, like an orchestra of tubas, sounded from the trees as multi-colored lightning flickered between them. The forward pull on Susan ceased, and she fell. The Guide assisted her up.

Why did you pull me away? Susan shouted in anger and dismay at the dot. Let go of me!

Brian stood immobile, facing away from his sister. His arms locked outward at ninety degree angles from his body, as his strawberry blonde hair stood straight out from his scalp in response to the energy which surrounded him. He awoke from his trance and turned around–the Guide dot was pulling his sister backward. He rubbed his eyes and asked, Where am I? What’s happening?

The white grass on which Brian stood quaked and split apart. Susan struggled to get free of the Guide dot’s hold on her, but he held her tightly in his grasp and pulled her backward again. Let me go! She shouted at the Guide and struck his face. He flinched, but held her in a tight grip.

We’re in danger! he said, pulling her.

Brian, the three trees, and the ground beneath him shifted upward. He howled with fear. Susan stopped struggling, as she watched her brother lifted high into the air screaming among the three shimmering trees which rose with him. The ground split open as if giving birth to a gigantic velvety black worm covered with thousands of small, dark spines. Brian and the trees were on the creature’s upper back.
