About this ebook
What if a catastrophic disaster destroyed the nation's electrical infrastructure? Would survivors band together to help one another or resort to lawlessness? That scenario is played out in a new novel, "Borders Crossing" by Archie Borders. Early in the story, the author describes an electromagnetic pulse attack and its effects on the Borders family, who live in northwest Ohio. The action follows a family forced out of their home because it no longer can protect them after widespread devastation. There are no resources left. There's no electricity and no food. Without law enforcement, people have resorted to robbing and killing to survive. With wildlife decimated, survivors are turning to cannibalism. The family decides to take their chances living in the woods where the threat of human violence is lower. "They try to separate themselves from the rest of society by going out in the wild and trying to live out there. It's a hard, cold winter," Archie says. Based on his knowledge of northern Ohio and southern Michigan, Archie did additional research on the sites mentioned in the book. As the travelers make their way on foot, they decide to head north and cross into Canada in hopes that country has not been hit as hard.

I was born and still reside in the state of Ohio. I am married to the most wonderful woman on earth and I feel blessed every day because of it. I have two wonderful children, although I never see them as much as I would like because they are grown and have lives of their own. My wife and I are very busy people and we go to bed exhausted every night from pursuing our many varied interests. We look at life as an adventure and try to live it to the fullest.I never really set out to write a book, it just sort of happened by accident. As a self-employed contractor, I was used to having a lot of free time during the winter months. Usually I would just hang out at home and play with our animals or cut firewood to feed the wood burning stove. The year that my mother got sick and came to stay with us, though, having a bit of time to kill was taken to a whole new level. In need of around the clock care, my wife and I took turns seeing to her needs. She would usually watch over her during the day and early afternoon hours, and I would assume the duties throughout the rest of the afternoon and overnight.Being unable to make what would be considered a normal amount of noise in the daytime, I looked for ways to pass the late night hours. Watching T.V. with the mute on stinks. Looking for a more creative way of passing the long, quiet evenings, I hit upon the idea of writing a short story.I had never written anything before in my life, so I don't know what gave me the idea that I would be able to pull it off. My wife was amused by the prospect and offered guarded encouragement. She was glad that I had finally found something to do to keep me out of her hair. The project came along very slowly at first. Having never written anything, even so much as a short story before, trying to construct a 400 plus page book was a monumental task. My learning curve was very steep and I doubted my writing talent many times along the way. If not for the constant encouragement from my wife and others, coupled with my usual over the top determination, I would have given up on the story long before it's completion. Thankfully, I didn't.Looking back on the trials and tribulations of constructing my book, I can now smile at my many frustrations. I am very proud of the finished project and I hope it brings the same enjoyment to it's readers that I found in writing it.Perhaps I've found an outlet for my relentless imagination. It sure does eat up time during the long, cold winter days and nights. Plus, my wife seems to like the peace and quiet.
