    Dedication

This book is dedicated to Marlene Blackburn. She encouraged me to keep a journal with all of my adventures, telling me that one day I should write a book. Now I have. Thanks Marlene for pushing me to do so.

    Chapter 1

It had been just over two years since the love of her life had died. Alaina and Luke had met on a blind date seventeen years earlier. They hit it off immediately. Within a few months, they were living together and within a year after that they were married. Like all marriages, they had their ups and downs and as Alaina was once told, the marriage had bent but was never broken.

Luke had been a smoker for over thirty years. When he turned fifty he went to a hypnosis seminar and quit on the spot. Ten years later he was diagnosed with lung cancer. When he was diagnosed, he looked at Lainey as he affectionately called her sometimes and said, I always knew smoking would come back to bite me in the ass, and boy it sure did. He underwent the usual chemotherapy and radiation treatments and then underwent surgery to have his entire left lung removed. He had a rough couple of days in ICU but actually did remarkably well. Of course other than the lung cancer, Luke was in good health and in good physical condition and only fifty-eight years old. He had a lot going for him.

Luke underwent weeks of cardiac rehabilitation and was released to play golf and get pretty much back to his normal routine just a month after surgery. Alaina thanked the good lord every day that Luke was able to take the buy-out and retire from the automotive plant where he had worked for nineteen years. He had finally been able to relax, and play golf, lots and lots of golf. It became a running joke between them when Luke kept hanging around aggravating Lainey while she was trying to work. He would say that he didn't spend enough time with her, or felt that he wasn't home enough and she would say, Can't you find something to do, somewhere to go? Why don't you go play some golf? Of course he couldn't get out the door fast enough but after everything he had been through, Lainey was so happy and thankful that he got to play as much as he did. He deserved it so much.

They had both been through a lot. Just days after Luke was diagnosed with cancer, his father passed away.
