He paced around the house for two hours. He began to wonder if she would ever come out of his bedroom. An idea hit him.

At the door, he knocked lightly. “Jaden may I come in?”

“Yes, sorry.” Jaden was stretched out on her stomach on his bed with a notebook and her laptop. She smelled of lime and coconut. She sat up and crossed her legs on the bed.

He sat down and held up a bottle of fine silver tequila. “I thought we could celebrate,” he said. Filling two shot glasses, he handed her one. “Ready?”

She nodded with a grin. “To the Green Beanery.”

They downed the shots on the count of three and chased them with limes. Over the next hour, they argued politics, American taxes, Starbucks versus independent coffee houses, and finished the entire bottle of tequila. There was a lot of laughter.

“You’re so much better looking than I thought you would be, Pierce.”

“Thanks...I think?” He swayed despite the fact that he was sitting down.

“Do you want to kiss me?”

He gave her a mock frown. “What kind of silly question is that, Jaden?”

“The kind that needs to be asked.” She leaned forward and landed on top of him, pushing him backwards on the bed. She kissed him and laughed against his lips.

“I wanted to taste you.”

“How do I taste?”

“Good enough to eat.”

He felt the same way about her. They clumsily kissed for half an hour but he realized she was so drunk and tired she could barely keep her eyes open. No way did he want her inebriated the first time he took her.

“Jaden, why don’t you get some rest and I’ll see you in the morning.” Pierce gave her a gentle goodnight kiss and she caught his hand when he moved to stand up.

“Don’t leave. Stay. This is your bed after all.”

He laid on top of the sheet while she crawled under it. She curled up next to him and promptly passed out. It took him another hour to follow. She smelled fantastic.

    About Alexandra Andersen

    Part One – Home Brewed

    Five years ago…

The chartered turbo prop plane lurched and rolled. The pilot raised his voice over the roar of the engine. Make sure your seatbelts are fastened.

Jaden Jablonsky gripped her belt and tightened it until she felt the hard fabric dig into her flesh. She vowed never to take another flight where she could actually watch the pilot doing his job.

She shut her eyes a moment and thunder clapped loudly. They flew open and a bright flash of lightning blinded her. The plane turned sideways and both her hands grabbed onto the seat. She didn’t open her eyes again until she felt the wheels of the plane connect roughly on the muddy landing strip.

We made it. The pilot sounded relieved.

The younger co-pilot wiped his sweaty forehead and opened the cabin door. She watched as the narrow metal steps were rolled towards the door.

Jaden felt suffocated. She gulped in air quickly, unbuckled her seatbelt, and slung her canvas bag over her shoulder.

Thank you. I mean it, she said to the pilot and shook his hand. He nodded gravely.

Jaden’s stomach still heaved; she gripped the narrow railing and carefully made sure each foot solidly made contact with each metal step. Her brown Doc Marten boots made a pleasing thud on the packed mud.

She stared in awe at the expanse of mountainous jungle before her. The last hour felt like an eternity but she survived her near-death experience.

It was time for her dream to begin.

Just hours ago, she’d stood in the first class lounge at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport waiting for her American Airlines flight to board. Her father, her stepmother, and her stepsister huddled around her.

Her father held her hand in his iron grip and talked in his normal booming voice about the need for safety precautions in foreign countries.

Her stepmother had smoothed and petted her hair, insisting on braiding her waist length ponytail even though Jaden told her she’d do it later.

Her stepsister had checked her canvas bag to make sure she had her passport, wallet, antibacterial wipes, camera, notebook, bandages, pens, pencils, travel documents, and twenty other assorted items she insisted Jaden needed.

It had made Jaden feel like a small child. The only three people she loved had been the verge of causing her to fly into a homicidal rage.

Listen! Dad, Ma, Noelle…please stop it this instant. She simmered.

Stop what, darlin’? We’re just tryin’ to keep you safe, is all. Her father shrugged and turned to his ex-wife Claire, the only mother that she truly remembered having.. Do you know what she’s upset about?

    No. She must be nervous.
