    Chapter 1

Jacob awoke with a screaming headache, a crash of thunder made it worse. The storm had raged most of the night, torrential rain was beating on the single window in Jacob's run down attic bedsit, a trickle of water ran through a crack in the window pain down the wall creating a small puddle on the bare floorboards.

Slowly he eased himself into the sitting position on the side of his bed, reaching into the drawer of his bedside table he found the pain killers, the glass of water on top of the table had a small spider swimming frantically across the top, he carefully fished it out and put it on the floor. Run home little one, he said as another crash of thunder made him wince, he downed two pain killers in one go with a big swig of the water.

One hour later the throbbing in his head had stopped, he washed and shaved before throwing on jeans and tee shirt, slowly he wound his way down the ten sets of stairs to the shared kitchen, it was empty when he arrived, after coffee and toast Jacob finally felt he was ready to face the day.

Until last week he had a reasonably good job, but he had been laid off with four others due to cut backs and loss of trade, these were hard times in Selon City, job vacancies were posted daily on the view screens in each apartment block foyer, as he walked through to the post room via the foyer he could see the screen display the usual no vacancies message for this time of day, the morning was half over but the storm had abated, just light drizzle falling on the grey passage outside.

Opening his post box he recognised the white envelope, his severance and last months pay credit, he removed the card from inside and striped it through the reader inside his mailbox, one hundred credits vanished in payment for the next weeks rent, eight hundred credits left in his account, this would not last long, he had to get a job any job.

He was about to close his mailbox when he noticed a buff coloured official looking package, as he removed it his interest was heightened by the green stamp in the bottom corner, Benge & Benge Attorneys, The Causeway, Selon City he checked again, yes it was addressed to him, he cradled it carefully as he made his way back up to his room.

As he closed his door the first glimmer of sunlight started shining through his window, sitting down at the small table in the corner of the room, he opened the package, inside he found a credit payment card marked maximum one hundred credits, a key and a letter from Benge & Benge Attorney's, Dear Mr Jacob Fenlay, Please find the enclosed travel expense and key to the estate of the late Mia Fenlay who passed two years ago aged one hundred and thirty years, We apologise for the delay but as the only person named in her will we had trouble locating you, a personal message is recorded on the com device enclosed, Jacob reached into the package and found the slim tablet device, he held it for several minutes before turning it on.

The screen burst into life as soon as
