    Setnya flattened her gills, smoothing the dripping water from her face. She squatted behind the sodden log on the rock and began breathing through her mouth and nose. The darkness hid her from sight. The cool rain washed the sea water from her scaly skin. The sky was surprisingly light even covered with water-filled clouds. The cold air chilled her, but so did the sight of the black sticks against the dark sky.

    She peered at the activity beneath the lights. What were they building? She could see in the night, but those bright lights messed up her vision. She’d volunteered to find out. She’d wanted the excitement. Now, it was time to do her task well.

    The land people were talking, but it took time for her hearing to adjust to the lack of water noise and actually make out their words. She hadn’t really been out of the water for years.

    Creeping closer, she was careful not to tear the webbing on her feet with the sharp rocks. Staying behind the driftwood, she tried to recall speech, so she could tell the others about what was being said. The words remained gibberish. She must try and remember.

    From the beach the building was about fifty, yards was that it? It looked like a complicated shape. They had made the bottom part of gray stone. It was going to be tall. The land people had six huge machines helping. And hundreds of people.

    Whatever it was, it was permanent. They had come back to try and reclaim the sea.

    She shivered. It had been a long time since the land people had ventured so close to the water. Had they forgotten? Did they not remember what her people had done to them?

    The noise from above came nearer. They had a flying
