CHAPTER ONE

THE BIG DAY

It was another hot, humid summer and another long drive to the beach. We always vacationed at the North Carolina Outer Banks for as long as I can remember. In between the small towns and long stretches of highway, we scanned the radio stations for the least amount of static and songs we enjoyed. The old maroon station wagon bounced along the winding roads like it was on bungee cords. This year, my dad and I had an extra stop planned for our trip.
