Palafamala Paddles’ Virtual Fishing Tournament
Aloha is something that can be felt all throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The people of Hawai‘i thrive on human connection, whether it’s a gathering with the ‘ohana, a jam session, a fishing excursion or a casual cruise party at the beach. For the last several months, people have had to adjust to new ways of gathering in order to keep these traditions alive.
Cameron Jacome, shaper and owner of Palafamala Paddles, knows the importance of keeping people connected during these challenging times. Originally from California, Cameron started shaping paddles when he lived with the Keahis about two decades ago. “They are a fishing family from Mala in Lahaina, Maui. Netting, diving and fishing of any kind is what that family loves. Pala, a small pan-fry fish, is the go-to for big parties in Lahaina. We would always go (to beat or slap) to get enough for the line. These moments were what I loved – all friends and family together cleaning fish, drinking beers, playing music and talking about paddling.” Cameron wanted to hold on to these memories forever and also wanted to give respect to the Keahis
