Was it his destiny to become a doctor only to wind up in prison? He sacrificed to become a doctor, not only for his ideals to help the sufferings of others, but also to improve his life. And then temptation is dumped into his lap. He ponders and vows to wait it out, to see how this life drama unfolds.
He has finally accepted the futility of the situation. He had taken a long time telling her, trying to find the right words. Why did you do it? Norma kept asking him. Did you not even think of your son who has been a youth leader in high school advocating against drugs? And now his father is going to be indicted for distributing drugs
. Norma stormed out of the house. She went to her mother’s house to tell them what is happening. They were all startled and disheartened of the news. Her mother sympathized with Don knowing that her own husband has also strayed away at one time. She forgives him for the sake of the children. Her aunt and her sister, both spinsters, started castigating all men. They cannot be trusted. Norma should divorce Don. Norma found no solace from them. She left the house and started driving on Hylan Blvd towards Midland Ave. She park on South Beach. She got out of the car. She got up on the boardwalk and started walking slowly; meditating. She has walked the whole length of the boardwalk without being aware of it. The sun has started to come down and she felt a cold chill. She drove back home.

Chapter 1
Dr. Don Moshew mused, what might have been if he had followed what his friend, Paul, offered. He was going to ask one of his patients, a soldier of one of Staten Island's mob bosses, to liquidate the star witness. Charged with dispensing controlled substances without medical necessity, Don gathered five of his close friends to help him, deal with the charges levied against him by the US District Attorney. This person pretended to be a bonafide patient. He came to the office after making an appointment. He complained of anxiety and insomnia. After a complete history and physical and routine blood tests, Dr. Moshew prescribed Valium for anxiety and Tuinal to aid his difficulty of sleeping.
He came once a month but later came more frequently, complaining of more anxiety. Dr. Moshew advised him to see a psychiatrist; he insisted in obtaining his medication. As each visit became more adversarial, he confessed that he had sold some of his medications to his friends. His main reason was that he was helping them from buying the more dangerous drugs on the street. Dr. Moshew told him to bring his friends in, and be examined so that proper treatment can be instituted. He gave him names and addresses, and doctor made charts of each as he related their stories. The doctor’s compassionate nature has masked Mr. Reid’s real intention. Mr. Reid has done the same thing to another doctor, convincing him to make charts for each prescription, as if a real patient existed. That doctor was also investigated and has lost his license. Fortunately for him the DEA was not involved.
Lucy Jones, a 20 years old crack addict, came to the office with a badly infected arm from multiple injections and a fever of 102 degrees F. Mr. Reid accompanied her to the doctor’s office and paid the visit. Doctor cleaned and dressed her infected arm and prescribed antibiotics to be taken by mouth. He advised her to refrain from intravenous crack. She visited the doctor every week with Mr. Reid until the infection subsided. He gave her antianxiety drugs to help her from going back to crack use.
Several sessions with Mr. Reid has occurred without him bringing in anymore patients. He claims that his friends cannot afford to pay the doctor’s office visits, as most of them work at the gas station and other menial jobs. He helps them by selling antianxiety drugs for $10 a tablet. Dr. Moshew told him that he cannot support this behavior and will have to dissociate from him; he threatened to report the doctor to the Board of Health. Dr. Moshew felt trapped and had no other choice but to acquiesce.
The following months were filled with much trepidation, as Dr. Moshew became aware that sooner or later the authorities would catch up to it. Indeed, one day this person, Harry Reid, got caught by the DEA agents, selling prescription drugs, on the street. The agents found him in possession of the bottles of controlled substances with the doctor's name on it. Facing jail time, and offered leniency, he agreed to wear a concealed tape recorder; helps them trap the doctor, to prescribe more drugs so that they can arrest him. Or he goes to jail. He wore the tape recorder for the next four visits to the doctor’s office; each time, the doctor tries to convince him to stop. He even tells him that he has lost his license to prescribed controlled drugs already. It was a lie. He kept pestering the doctor, disrupting his office schedule. Dr. Moshew struggled to keep his cool. He has ten more patients to see before he goes to Brookdale Hospital. He had admitted two patients with congestive heart failure this morning. He will not be home until 11 pm, too late to help his children with their homework. He scribbled the prescription hurriedly. When they finally obtained enough quantities of the controlled drugs, the agents arrested Dr. Moshew in his office.
Ann, the receptionist, came to the room, tear-eyed and full of anxiety; the agents told her that they have come to arrest the doctor. There were ten patients in the waiting room, and one by one, they left in silence, not knowing what to make out of the event of the day. Dr. Moshew asked the agents for the reason of the arrest. They said a Jeff Tobin, an assistant district Attorney, had called them to pick him up. He asked if they have a warrant. They did not. Instead, one of the men produces a piece of paper torn from a newspaper with the telephone number. He told the doctor to call the number and talk to Jeff Tobin. Dr. Moshew thought that this was highly irregular and reminds him of a shakeup. Doctor argued that they can only arrest somebody if they have observed a crime being committed, or if a judge has issued a warrant of arrest. Since neither is happening, they have no business being there in his office. They were bent on carrying the arrest. There were three of them, and one took out his handcuff and started towards the doctor. Doctor picked up his phone, and called Norma, his wife. Fortunately, his wife was home. She just came back from driving the children to school. Usually, Norma would be taking a walk in the mall. He asks her to find a lawyer. He has been arrested and will be taken to the Federal court in Brooklyn.
Dr. Moshew closed his eyes and tried to relax. His heart has been racing and he felt woozy. His hands were still handcuffed in front of him. He was not that uncomfortable but wished they would take it off already. Suddenly two people appeared at the other end of the room, and their eyes were just roaming around the room as if looking for somebody. Finally, one of the men called his name and Dr. Moshew yelled, Here
. The other man did not show any sign of recognizing Dr. Moshew. He later found out that that person was the pharmacist, who was conniving with Harry Reid, to supply him the drugs with Dr. Moshew's prescription. The DEA agent was trying to establish whether Dr. Moshew was involved in a conspiracy.
Finally, after several hours of waiting, he was brought to the magistrate court. Contacted earlier by his wife, Mr. Ray Basher, the lawyer who will represent him, was already there. The judge, after talking to the US attorney, determined that
