About this ebook

Downright Filthy Pitching - The Science of Effective Velocity - This is a study of baseball and softball pitching speeds and how location dramatically changes the reaction time of pitches to the hitter. This is the first in a series of three books covering this fascinating new science that has already changed the game at every level. This series is about answering some questions that have been a mystery since the very first at bat in organized baseball. Major League pitchers, hitters, pitching coaches and managers have embraced Effective Velocity to help them enhance their approach to the game sine 2004. Collegiate coaches in both baseball and softball have revamped both their hitting and pitching philosophies based on this exciting new concept. NCAA championships - MLB Division Championships and countless other milestones have been accomplished using the laws that govern the confrontation between pitcher and hitter; Effective Velocity. Discover the reason why pitchers can execute a pitch in what is thought of as a perfect location and it ends up a homerun. Find out why hitters swing and miss belt high fastballs right down the middle of the plate one day and hit out of the park the next. Are taller pitchers really more Filthy? Is outside fastball really the best pitch in baseball? Is movement the most crucial factor in a pitcher's success? Perry Husband

Perry Husband is the author of the Hitting Is A Guess video series and book, so it begs the question, "What is a hitting guy doing writing a pitching book?" Perry's more than 10 years of research in the art of timing in the field of hitting has lead to some amazing discoveries in what hitters can do and more importantly, what they cannot do. Perry played at Antelope Valley Junior College where he led all of California in hitting and set a national hit streak record of 32 games. At CSU Northridge, he was co-captain of the NCAA Division II champs in 1984 and was named MVP of the College World Series. After two years in the pro ranks at the minor league level with the Minnesota Twins organization, he pursued a career as a PGA teaching apprentice in Southern California. After teaching golf for four years, Perry turned back to his sport of origin and opened and operated The Baseball Academy for the better part of 17 years. He coached American Legion baseball for four years and was the hitting coach for Antelope Valley College for six seasons. While conducting research that his students referred to as lessons, there were many ground breaking discoveries that came to the surface, but the discovery of Effective Velocity has sparked various patents and three book titles so far. Perry was inducted into the Antelope Valley College Sports Hall Of Fame as well as the CSU Northridge Sports Hall Of Fame. He was a speaker at the ABCA coaches convention in 2004 and teaches and speaks at clinics nationwide. He lives in Southern California with his two young Jedis Shea and Quinn, the biggest inspirations of all. Like most instructors and teachers, his philosophies are derived from a long list of very special people, without any one of whom, would not have accomplished the feat of bringing the science of Effective Velocity to light. This list includes people from all walks of life from coaches and teachers to childhood mentors and most assuredly, each and every student over the years.

Special thanks to my brother Bob Husband and his wife, Sue who have always believed, inspired and backed every adventure in every way. To my brother Earl Husband and his wife Kay both have provided endless spiritual inspiration. My sisters, Sue, Sandy, Jimmye and Reba who are always there to cheer me on in spirit. Jim Slaton who helped formulate my education of how professionals pitch. Jim Kelly who believed in the project and profoundly more importantly, believed in me enough to help this project off the ground. Todd Budke, who's amazing talent as a baseball and softball hitter has helped to formulate the mechanics at the very beginning of this work, as well as one of the instructors involved in the class experiments. Jim Vatcher, Alan Jaeger and Ron Wolforth who were models to show how to follow a dream. Special thanks to Bob Hiegert who is one of the great unsung baseball coaches in collegiate history. To Jay Bell for volunteering to be a guinea pig for the mechanical side of the equation. Randy Istre and Jay Donchetz of Inside Edge who believed enough to open their databanks up to a crazy baseball miner to verify this golden information. Thanks to all the students over the years who both inspired and rejuvenated my love of the game. Seth, As a man thinketh, so shall he be. Finally a very special thanks to Tom House. Tom put his reputation on the line to test a crazy theory which is why Effective Velocity is being presented to the baseball world today.

    Preface

    Filthy--The ultimate compliment in pitching.

The term ‘Filthy’ defines a pitcher as having nasty movement, disguises pitches well, unpredictable, throws strikes, commands both sides of the plate and many other attributes that make him very hard to hit. Downright Filthy Pitching gives ‘Filthy’ a whole new dimension. Hitting is timing and pitching is upsetting timing and Filthy is understanding timing.

This book was written to answer a whole lot of burning questions that have gone unanswered for a very long time. The discovery of Effective Velocity has opened doors that will change the way the game is played as well as the way it is taught. The pitcher/hitter confrontation will never be looked at quite the same again. This book offers the absolute newest discovery in baseball and will hopefully be just the tip of the iceberg, inspiring you really smart guys to advance the game even further. The strike zone will have a very new look, a whole slew of new terms and most definitely a new pair of goggles to view the game through like never before. Computer software to collect and analyze pitch data in a whole new way, new radar guns and teaching aids of various design to help in the learning process of this cutting edge information.

Much of the fuzziness that surrounded some of the mysteries of why certain things happen in hitting and pitching will be cleared up in a way that is not based in lore and superstition, but simple science. Not the kind of science that PHDs dabble in, but the type us regular guys can understand. The true test in intelligence is not really in the discovery of something new, but the ability to deliver that information in a concise way that everyone can understand and utilize. That is the only way that it can truly be a gift to baseball, it has to instruct, inspire and entertain as a friend often says, thanks Tom for that lesson. I hope this work does that for you and I look forward to bringing the hitting side of Effective Velocity to light very soon.

Filthy introduces you to the science of Effective Velocity by describing what it is and how it has been affecting hitters' reaction time since baseball's very first at bat. You will learn how we took 25 amateur hitters through an 8,000 plus at bat experiment to see what they could and could not do in the realm of live reactionary at bats. Then we will explore a 4 million pitch database that allows us to look closely at any and every at bat in recent history to see how this idea stands the test of time at the highest level of the game. Lastly, we will show you the ingredients that it takes to make a pitcher Downright Filthy and all of the science that goes with it from start to finish. You will see a major league pitcher that transformed himself into a Filthy competitor with some very timely, yet minor adjustments.

This book is dedicated to all the Hitting Is A Guess students out there that went off to colleges and pro teams that were told to change their swing and their approach because the coach did not fully grasp what these hitters could really
