CHAPTER 1
Life’s Journey
"Each difficult moment has the potential to open my eyes and open my heart"—Myla Kabat-Zinn
Although we believe that we are born and die only once, the truth is that throughout our lives, we die and are reborn many times. As outlandish as this statement may appear, traumatic experiences are usually the trigger for these transformations, catapulting us to new facets of life that we would otherwise not experience. Many times, these experiences make us change course. That is, if we pay heed to their messages. I’m only one of countless humans on this planet who can tell such a story as this, but I beg you to share in this message. My experience was extreme in the sense that I faced almost certain death. Regardless, those with less extreme experiences can still relate to the message of this book, which remains even though our own events vary in degree. Facing adversity and emerging victorious is truly a triumph of the body, mind and spirit. We are all capable of not only overcoming these events but also learning their lessons and charting new courses in our lives, resulting in our growth and enrichment as individuals.
The birth of this book was a natural byproduct of my previous book, in which I narrated an unbelievable but true story. That book, Pain and Gain: The Untold True Story, was the final chapter is my cleansing process. It was also a detailed account of an event that changed the course of my life and who I was. There are certain events that we either use to turn ourselves in a new direction or that leave us in a state of stagnation, unable to move forward. These events can, in many cases, leave us in a comatose state, searching for answers as to why these things happened to us. In fact, the answer is simply that since we did not heed prior warnings, the universe has shaken us into listening. That choice is always up to us. We consciously decide how these sometimes bitter and harsh lessons will help us to find answers and move forward or cower and give up all hope. It must be said that
