    fanny is raped by some young louts she meets in a pub. with growing insight she realises her own complicity in her misfortune even as she acquiesces in a convenient but unpleasant relationship with a doctor who gives her ambiguous shelter. the gardener is very fond of his little white dog. there are re-encounters with the louts and an old boy friend. she begins to take charge of her life. the picaresque character of the novella adds to its humour, sensuality and humanity.
