    Synopsis:

Katie Matthews has never been lucky when it comes to the opposite sex. Truth is, she has never really trusted any man. When Dr. Scott Davis sweeps into her life with his dark hair, blue eyes, and flirty demeanor, will she be able to finally give in to a chance at love? Or will her overly analytical side overshadow the hopeless romantic within her?

In honor of my grandmother, through whom I received a love for romance novels, and learned how to become a hopeless romantic.

    About the Author

    Chapter 1

    3 a.m.….

    Mommy!

Huh? Katie opened her eyes up and tried to adjust to the dim light.

    Mommy! Help me!

A scream emanated from the room two doors down. Jason! Katie jumped to her feet, falling to the floor in a swirl of bedclothes. She wrestled with the covers until she was free and stumbled in the dark to her son’s bedroom where the small boy lay crumpled in a ball on the bed. She reached out to comfort him, Jason, she soothed, What’s wrong?

My tummy. Jason reached up to hug his mom around the neck, but his body convulsed forward and he let out a yelp. It hurts, mommy! Really bad!

Katie went to the bathroom to grab a cool washcloth and the thermometer. Oh God, she thought to herself. What am I going to do? Please, Lord, help me! I don’t know what to do for him. She jerked around; the sound of loud sobs sent a wave of panic through her. She wet the cloth in cold water and grabbed the thermometer.

Katie stayed by Jason’s side, wiping his forehead with the damp cloth. His fever was 102.6 when she last checked it, but after an hour had passed, it was becoming more evident that Jason was not getting any better. His fever had started to rise over 103 degrees and in the process, he vomited on the bed.

Katie had no choice but to take him to the emergency room. She scooped her son up into her arms and drove the three miles to the hospital. The trip felt like an eternity with Jason moaning and crying with every bump and turn of the car.

When she arrived at County Memorial Hospital, it was full as always. She had never once driven past there when it was not full. The town had no medical clinics for people who could not afford proper care, so the only place for them to turn was the emergency room of County Memorial. Because of that, the waiting room was full, no matter what time of the day or night it was. People came for every reason that could be thought of, from sprains to colds, and even toothaches. Katie often wondered if there was something that could be done to benefit the people of that small community. It was an idea that she had been dwelling on since she was a young teenager living there. She herself was born into a family whose parents could not afford insurance or doctor’s visits. For the poor and middle-income people, it was the emergency room or no help at all.

Katie waited for their turn in the triage nurse’s office. Sometimes it often seemed like a lot of unnecessary paperwork, and an unnecessary wait. They liked to claim that they always took the most critical patients first, but sometimes it was more along the lines of politics than seriousness. When it was Jason’s turn, Katie carried him in to see the nurse.

What brings you in? The young nurse asked, her eyes never leaving the piece of paper in front of her.

My son, Katie replied. He woke up about three this morning screaming and complaining with a tummy-ache. I think it might be appendicitis.

Oh really, the nurse said as she rolled her eyes, So you’re a doctor?

    No, but—

Let me take his vital signs. You can register him and wait. Leave the diagnosis up to the real docs, okay? The nurse began to wrap the white blood pressure cuff around the boy’s arm and placed the thermometer under the boy’s tongue.

"No. It is not okay. My son needs medical attention and he needs it right now!" Katie demanded.

I’m sure he does, Hun, but to be honest, it’s probably just a little virus that has been going around.

I do not think that a fever of a hundred and five would qualify as being a virus! Katie grew louder.

The nurse stopped taking his vitals and cast Katie a glaring look across the top of Jason’s head and through gritted teeth spat out, Not everyone who has a ‘tummy-ache’ has appendicitis!

Katie’s mouth flew open in shock, Are you insinuating that I’m stupid or something? Or does the fact that I’m a mother mean that I’m overreacting?

The nurse removed the cuff from the boy’s arm and said, Which ever suits you?

Listen, I did not come here to be insulted. I came here because my son it sick.

"Then I suppose you had better let the staff here do its job. Besides, you
