Welcome to 21D Anthology I, the first digital publication from 21D.
Anthology I brings together a selection of material from the first four issues of the printed magazine. The pieces within are a range of short fiction and poetry, as chosen by our editors, which represent the diversity of theme, tone and style that 21D has published so far.
This new format allows our contributors’ work to reach a wider audience than ever before, with global distribution via the Smashwords online store. While it's our first step in this space, we hope Anthology I will pave the way for further electronic publications from 21D and we are exploring other digital platforms that may be suitable in future.
With the prohibitive cost of print forcing so many publications to close, including some well-known and admired literary journals, it’s important for us to evaluate the potential of the digital playground not only for our readers, but also for our contributors. While traditionally print has enjoyed a higher intrinsic value, that perception is beginning to change. Our intention at this stage is continue to offer a limited number of high quality print magazines, while progressively introducing lower cost digital alternatives that compliment the family of 21D literary and art publications.
Anthology I incorporates the first volume of the magazine: Journey, Street, Alien and Light. With an undercurrent of Growth behind it, we hope you enjoy this exciting new development in 21D’s evolution.
Thanks once again to our contributors—the artists, writers and editors—for allowing us to reprint their material.

Roadworks In Heat
Matt Bennetts
Lately, I suspect that roadworks
have begun to find my car
sexually attractive.
They're everywhere I drive to,
slowing down the traffic for a better look
and always trying to gain my car's attention
by wearing the same unshaven council worker
complete with all the trendy accessories:
fluro-orange hi-visibility vest,
dark beanie,
hairy beer gut
and lit cigarette.
All saying:
'Yoo hoo, white Toyota… '
The thing is,
my car knows it can do better.
Author—Matt Bennetts
Matt is a young writer/childcare worker from Melbourne's northern suburbs. He writes mainly nonsense poetry. He has had his writing published in several small magazines and in 2009 was runner up in the Doris Leadbetter Melbourne Poetry Cup.
Roadworks In Heat was previously published in 21D Issue 2—Street.

Dog Fight

The cold bites me. I crouch, stare at the pale moon, listen for cars. I hate waiting.
