    Chapter One

These clouds also contain tiny dust particles called interstellar grains, these grains can range in size from large molecules to a few micrometers. Mr. Mallard drones on from the front of the class. I look back and forth between the board and the notebook in front of me, scribbling as fast as possible.

Psst I ignore the annoying nagging from behind me. Psssssssssst. It comes more forcefully that time, causing Mr. Mallard to look in my direction. I smile at him as he narrows his eyes and returns to his incredibly interesting slide show about interstellar clouds. Flying space dust, yup, that’s totally not going to put me to sleep.

Seriously dude, pssst! I wince as it starts up again.

What do you want! I turn my head and whisper behind me. I look back toward Mr. Mallard, but his back is turned away from the class probably in an attempt to ignore the fact that nobody’s still awake. His white lab coat fans out behind him and his white-grey hair is sticking up at odd angles as he adjusts his bow tie. Nothing unusual there.

Did you check the bulletin board this morning? Lennox says from behind me. He’s crouched down over his desk, his eyes dancing excitedly around in his thick skull.

Yes. I turn back around in my chair.

Lennox makes an annoyed sound behind me. And? Was there anything, he looks around him, his eyes scanning the other kids taking notes, their shoulders hunched over their notebooks, you know, there?

Nope, I didn’t see anything. He looks immediately deflated. He tries to hide it as his shoulders slump visibly, but fails. Hey. I turn completely around in my seat to face him, putting my hand on his shoulder. Don’t worry, I’m sure they just haven’t gotten the flyers up yet, and you know, it’s just a game Lennox, it’s not that important.

His eyes shoot up to my face. It’s not just a game, this is everything.

Uh, calm down crazy. Your life does not depend on whether or not you win a silly wa-

Lennox and Parker. Please cease with the noise. Am I going to have to move you?

No Mr. Mallard. I answer at the same time Lennox says, Probably. I glare back at him, his only response a suggestive eyebrow wiggle.

The bell rings just as Mr. Mallard starts getting into his I shouldn’t still be teaching, I don’t even like kids speech. I pack up my books and head toward my locker. Lennox leaves the classroom right in front of me, turning around and walking backwards while talking.

Two thousand five hundred dollars is a lot of money Park.

Yeah, it’s probably the same amount you’ll pay if you injure yourself walking up the stairs backwards. He turns back around, but not before he sticks his tongue out at me. As we reach the top of the stairs I bolt to my locker, narrowly avoiding the large bodies and sharp elbows of my fellow senior class. I twist in my combination and open my locker door. Maize appears beside me, opening up her locker door as well. Where have you been? I turn to face her, leaning on my locker door and crossing my hands over my chest.

    "Yes, we’re all quite
