    CHAPTER 1

    Fidelity

I welcomed the cool mist that brushed against my face as I ran through an unknown terrain. The tree branches draped down like a mane, lightly tickling my shoulders. Lost in awe, I devoured what I deemed to be the Garden of Eden. The raw earth’s velvety texture cushioned the soles of my feet as I glided across the forest floor. The rhythm of my beating heart is all I heard, while the world around me fell silent to its song. Unconcerned, I found myself in pursuit of an unknown figure, masked by the dark haze of my dream. I was caught up in the moment of playing a childish game of cat and mouse.

Stopping at a clear, tranquil stream of spring water, the shadowy figure offered his hand to help me cross, and our game came to a pause. A strong force compelled me; unable to deny him, I grabbed his hand. His strong hand molded over mine. I was like a lost sheep surrendering my trust over as he led the way. Consumed by inner peace, I felt alive and free within his touch.

Without warning, the silky, dusk sky turned into a blazing burning light while the forest walls closed in on us. He gripped my hand tightly and guided me away from the danger. Within that next moment, the ground we stood on rose above the trees. Everything around us vanished into nothing. A dark haze swallowed up the red sky as my protector’s silhouette transformed into a white gleam of light.

Terrified and apprehensive, I clutched on to him, his strong arms cast around me, merging our souls together. Something about his presence told me that he'd die protecting me. The coldness of his breath trickled down my neck, which bred a familiar, intoxicating sensation that consumed me wholly. It was impossible for some unknown thing to have such influence over me, as I heard him whisper, Forgive me, it is not at all what you think. His recognizable angelic tone etched in my mind as it slashed at my heart. Alvero’s face became clearer. The pain came flooding back as it ripped me apart again.

An unbearable pain of tiny daggers scratched my inner core. My body shot straight up from my bed, awaking me from a beautiful nightmare. My hair pasted to the cold sweat that clung to my body. I quickly brushed my hair off my face as I looked around in a panic, confirming that it had been a dream. I needed to hate the thing responsible for my father’s death, unable to erase how deeply-rooted Alvero became in my soul, whether I liked it or not.

Not even the cold water I splashed over my face could wash away the remains of my nightmare. I slid back into my bed in a failed attempt to get comfortable. I tossed and turned, struggling to delete Alvero from my mind. Frustrated, I pushed my sheets away, knowing there was no falling asleep again.

I tossed on my tracksuit and escaped quietly down the stairs, continuing toward the back door, in an attempt to not wake up my mother. After zipping up my jacket, I slid my feet into my boots, and like a robber in the night, I crept out the back door. I felt wind blow back my long dark hair, as I inhaled the brisk cold air, in a useless endeavor to calm my rage. Furious, I darted down the path, wanting to expel my built-up anger.

Coming to the end of the bay and unable to run anymore, I felt defeated as I stared out at the massive body of water. I assessed all the events since my move to Gloucester; how my carefree, tree-hugging life had been turned inside out. I’d had little time to figure out who I truly am, and worst of all, hiding what I am. Joey would never accept the real me. The only one who knows and accepts me for who I am is my father’s killer, Alvero. If only I could turn back time, and never allow myself to fall for him and could change the way I still feel for him.

I felt a tidal wave of pain come crashing down on me, as I collapsed to my knees and grabbed onto my head. I cried out, Why? to the unknown, hoping God would answer my cry. Mad at the world and the unfortunate situations tossed my way, I was torn by old-world hatred, two lives and two loves. An inner rage consumed me as I stared down at the frozen shore. Flaring my topaz eyes in anger I released my rage and allowed myself to erupt. A small fire formed where my eyes had settled, and I knew it came from my rage. My head fell back as my black hair whipped wildly with the wind, as I fully embraced the energy that started numbing my pain. The fire rose as I got back onto my feet, with the clear understanding; the fire is really a part of me.

I conducted the fire; lifting my hands up, using a magical thread, I directed the fire in patterns like a conductor. Moving the flames around, pushing it from one side to another, it consumed me, allowing me to become more numb. Something about it felt invigorating and devious, as I played with this new-found power. Redirecting the flames over to the icy cold water, I pulled the flames down into the water. Watching as the water engulfed the flames in one mighty stroke with a gesture of my hands, I fell into a heartless trance, as the pain came rushing back.

What have you done? Alvero’s voice ripped through the night, like an unexpected arrow. Ill–equipped, I was knocked to the ground. He held my hands back as his weight pinned me down; leaving me powerless. Everything happened so fast; he completely caught me off guard.

Hissing through my teeth, refusing to look at the face I wanted to hate him but could not, I yelled, Get Off Of Me. I turned to face him, looking dead into his astonished green eyes. I struggled to free myself from his strong grip as his body pressed down on me.

I know you hate me, but regardless of what you think of me, I vowed to your father to protect and watch over you. Do you honestly believe that if I had killed him, those would be his dying words? Trust me. If I’m the enemy, you would have been dead a long time ago, you foolish girl, he scolded, furious, as the look in his emerald eyes sliced at my heart and soul. You have no idea what you have unleashed… I should have known that night, when you told me about the fire at Carlos’. Too consumed with you, I didn’t pay attention to the truth. He released his hold and sprung back onto his feet, looking distraught in his realization of me.

Getting back up on my feet, I stood my ground, eye to eye with him, and his soft features hardened. How dare you judge me? Since the first day you came into my life, you have brought nothing but death and pain. You’re the one responsible for the pain that has fueled this fire power…I hate you Alvero. I wish you would have left me to die the first time; I would never know the pain of believing in you, I lashed out with rage. Standing, our eyes still locked, the early moon lightly glistened off his dark hair, making him more desirable. My rage was fed by the fact that I needed to hate him and deny my feelings for him.

Is this how you honestly feel, you ungrateful witch? His eyes turned cold with anger, killing me softly. Don’t worry witch, you’ll never see me interfere in your life again. His voice unyielding, his eyes turned a cold mint green. Wishing I could take back what I said, his back turned to me, and then instantly he vanished into the early dawn.

I stood feeling confused inside, allowing my anger to consume my true feelings; I refused to believe what I knew to be true. It is easier to blame and hate Alvero than to hate myself for falling for him and betraying Joey and my father. I stood frozen in my own shame, losing track of time and life. The sun began peeking over the horizon. Regretting the things I said to Alvero, not knowing what my life will be now with him gone, I couldn’t move.

I heard my mother’s footsteps in the distance as she approached from behind and wrapped a big blanket around me. Let’s get you back inside; you’re frozen, she whispered, escorting me back toward the house. Her loving hands rubbed over my arms, melting the cold layer of self-hate.

She guided me back to my room, placing me on my bed and tucking me in like a sick child. My mother walked over to my fireplace and placed a couple of logs into its pit. She knelt down, and with the softness of her breath, blew fire, she turned and looked at me with a smile. Watching her get back up, I came to the understanding, we carry the same power.

I love you, my mother whispered, grazing my forehead with a kiss. I’ll be right back, sweetheart. She smiled with affection before leaving me.

I sat up to watch the fire consume the logs, knowing how easy my new-found power could consume me. I understood the uncertainty of my life path, and I could not help but to let my tears escape.

The creak of my door opening broke my train of thought, as I wiped the tears from my face, I looked up to see mother carrying a breakfast tray. The sweet scent of lemon balm, marjoram and the musky aroma of angelica filled my senses as my mother handed me her special tonic to drink. Placing the tray on my nightstand, she sat on my bed next to me.

You know, I saw you this morning down at the bay. Your power is incredibly strong. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, as long as you don’t allow it to consume you. She smiled, grabbing my hand. He truly does love you. I realized that night when he brought you home half-dead. As much as I hate him and will regret saying this; I know his love is unconditional. Exhaling, she got up and walked over to the window. Folding my arms, I shut my eyes, annoyed that she had to bring up Alvero.

I envy his love for you, regardless of his past mistakes. You know things weren’t that way with your father and me... I’m not proud of myself, but that night your father came to kill me, I bewitched him, playing on his emotions so that I might live. Pausing, she glanced at me and then looked away in shame as her dark hair draped over her shoulders.

Lifting her head up, her dark eyes met mine again. We both wanted this stupid conflict to be over with. In our defiance, we sinned against our better judgment. Conceiving you gave birth to our love. I never remarried because I need to protect you. One thing you must understand is that when a Bruxa female gives herself to a male, they become forever joined. Only in death may the bond be broken.

Promise me that whoever you choose to be with, you truly love one another. If not, you will be cursed by the same bond as your grandmother, who is bound to Laruen regardless of her love for me or my father. She sighed with sadness.

Mom, trust me, the last thing I want to do is sleep with anybody. She defiantly caught my attention with her tippy toe sex talk, "I’ve discovered that I have the ability to create and manipulate fire. I’m the last of the Royal Bruxa bloodline, and first hybrid vampire/Lampir child. My boyfriend is a shape-shifting wolf who hates Lampirs, and the only one who loves me for me is my father’s killer. And you’re worried about me giving myself away? I protested, shaking my head. Does the Lampir hunting down our bloodline have anything to do with our power to manipulate fire?" I asked, coiling around my sheets.

They believe in an old prophecy about God’s phoenix that will destroy the night world and make the bloodlines pure. The phoenix is believed to be a fire that, once unleashed, will be unstoppable, cleansing the world of the Grigori’s sins. Since our bloodline, the Malicus is the only lineage of Bruxa to possess this ability of manipulating the four elements, they naturally presume we will destroy them finally. The sad thing is, The Grigori were the angels who sinned with the daughters of eve; both Bruxa and Lampir carry bloodlines of Grigori, she sighed again as she sat herself beside me. There is much for you to learn, my little fire-starter, she grinned, tucking my hair behind my ear.

That’s all I seem to be doing is learning, when it will end?I muttered through my teeth. Just when I think it cannot get worst, something else happens. Is there anything else I should be expecting? What exactly am I mother? A mutant freak, or Jean Grey, and what is to become of me at my eighth coronation when I become one with my power? I pleaded with eagerness.

I wish I had the answer for you sweetheart, it’s in God’s hands. That’s why I’ve taught you more about faith in God, and not in the Bruxa customs. I knew your life path would be tested because you are of both bloodlines, and besides, I ran away with your father after my coronation, so my knowledge is vague. My mother tried to hide her concern behind her unknowing smile.

I had to tell my mother about the room, there had to be something in there that would be helpful. I don’t understand half the stuff up there, but my mother must. Mom, there’s something I have to show you; before you say anything…I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about Dad’s private study room I found. I guess I wanted to keep this secret of him to myself, I shrugged, tossing my sheets off as I grabbed her hand and proceeded downstairs to the study.

Standing in front of the secret entrance, my mother remained silent. I know I should have told you earlier. I reached up and grabbed the lever Alvero had shown me.

I’m glad you’re showing me this and opening up to me. My mother Sonia broke her silence as she followed me up the narrow stairs. I have always known about this room, but only by invitation can I enter this room. You see these carvings on the doorway protect this room from intruders. She pointed toward the tiny patterns carved at the entrance, which I never noticed before.

Mentally and physically exhausted, I left my mother to explore the room in hopes that she would have a better understanding of everything, while I went back to bed.

    ****

I leapt out of bed when I heard the chime of the doorbell. Looking at the time, I realized I had slept in. I flung my sweater on and rushed to the door, knowing I had forgotten my and Joey’s plans to go out and meet up with the rat pack.

I’m so sorry, I pleaded with uncertainty, as I opened the door. Pressing my lips, I looked up to see the displeasure on Joey’s face as he stood there, arms folded. I’m so sorry... I grimaced wearily, I can’t believe I slept in all day. Give me half an hour and I’ll be ready, I shrugged ushering him in.

If you’re not feeling good we can cancel tonight, he smirked, as he made his way in.

No, I’m fine, just give me about half an hour; feel free to make yourself at home while I get ready, I rambled, already making my way back to my room.

An uncomfortable feeling came over me as I stood in the shower, almost an instinctual warning. Peering out the shower curtains to an empty room set my mind at ease; maybe the stress of this morning still plagued me. Drying myself, I still felt on guard, something was off, but I could not put my finger on it. Wiping the steam off the mirror, taking a good look at myself, I gave my head a good shake while I unfastened the clip and let down my dark mane of hair.

Still feeling paranoid, I wrapped my towel sternly over my body before walking out of my bathroom to my closet. Reaching into my closet to grab my clothes, my fear had been confirmed as I heard something silently approach me from behind. My blood fueled with the burn as my Lampir instinct began to emerge.

Startled by Joey’s touch as his finger traced down the exposed flesh of my neck, I held the towel tightly to my body, squeezing my eyes shut and repressing my burn, forcing myself to turn back to normal. Without delay, I jumped around to face him. You scared the be-Jesus out of me! What are you doing up here? You’re supposed to be downstairs, I mused, hiding my discomfort with a smile.

After all, you are my mate, he cannily smirked, as his fingers slid down my arm, sending an uncomfortable chill down my spine.

Come on Joey, enough with the jokes. I need to get ready! I pleaded, pushing him away. I was distressed at how he invaded my privacy uninvited, regardless if he is my boyfriend. His milky, brown eyes darkened with a strong hunger I have never seen.

The other day you left me craving you so much, he whispered, and pressed himself closer to me, lifting a piece of my hair up to his nose. Your mother’s not here, so who’s going to stop the big bad wolf, he deviously grinned, as he tried going in for a kiss.

My stomach turned as a chill ran through me; I turned my head to avoid his attempt as I pushed him back. Joey please, you’re making me feel uncomfortable, I whimpered.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you feel that way, he sheepishly frowned, as he backed away and his eyes returned to normal. I’ll be downstairs waiting for you, he whined, and lowered his head down in shame for his lack of control.

I watched him walk out of my room, having mixed emotions of what had taken place. I felt violated, but sorry for him too. He had never made me feel this way before. He has always been gentle and respectful. I was unsure if I was troubled by his aggressive behaviour, or my guilty conscience of my feelings for Alvero; and not to mention if he only knew that the blood of his enemy resides within me… I glided down the stairs to see his strong, masculine body hunched, his head lowered, wallowing in his self-pity. Hey, I didn’t mean to come across as cold, but you caught me off-guard; and being half-naked emphasized it more, I sighed, shrugging my shoulders back.

No, I was out of line, it’s just... he pressed his lips and looked up at me.

Why don’t we just forget about what just happened, I interrupted, as I grabbed his hand, helping him up.

Fine. You do know I love you and would never hurt you, he said, relieved, as he stood. "I already called the twins,
