Zack
Moving sucks; I mean it can be painful. Ever try moving thirty long boxes of comic books? It was right after New Year’s day. The holidays were finally over, a new decade was upon us, and I was moving out of Rockville Maryland. My name is Zack, and I am a freelance reporter for a paper/website in Washington, DC. I had been there for several years and not taken a vacation unless you count going to someplace exotic for an assignment. I wanted to work with my hobby. I had loved it for as long as I could remember. The Cason had work that needed to be filled in their metro crime section. I was born in Worcester and lived there till I was seventeen when I moved to Waynesboro, Virginia.
It’s hard to stay in one spot when you travel as much as I have and I really try to capture the weird and unusual things life has to offer. If you think the stories that you are told of things that go bump in the night are just stories, brother, you have another thing coming. Hell, here in DC and Maryland you have a lot more to worry about than the normal corrupt politicians and suits in black. The Washington area is a nice place to visit, but after a while you never really want to live there. I just decided I wanted a change of scenery and to get away from the weirdness. The change and less stressful job in a smaller city are what I needed. It may be mundane but I was looking forward to the relaxation.
I accepted a part time job taking pictures for the local paper in Worcester, Massachusetts. I found the ad on a job site. I faxed over my work and the editor was impressed and he hired me over the phone. I would be covering games and film reviews, as their original critic had left. This was great, as the only time I ever went to MA was for Pax East, a huge east coast gaming convention. One of the things leaving my apartment was my massive gaming collection which was shipped to a storage locker in Worcester when I found a bigger place to live. I needed to stick a lot of what I owned in a friend’s basement and leave my apartment. The only problem was I had two weeks to get to Worcester. I had to find a cheap hotel to stay in until I found an apartment, as I only knew a few people in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. When the crash happened I lost a ton of money I had invested for years and cashed in on overseas ownership of particular items that had racked up a few hundred thousand dollars. I was able to save money I had to start a video game/comic book project I was working on and hoped to have ready for Pax in April. A side scowling top-down horror game. Sasquatch Ate My Neighbors. Very old school, 16-bit style game.
I was in the hotel when the doorbell rang and my fellow reporters had to stop by to bring me to a party. Vincent, Luke, and Simon came into the apartment after I buzzed them up. Vincent, who was built like a linebacker with red hair and used to play for the Washington Redskins, worked in sports covering The Redskins and Orioles. Simon, about 6’3 and skinny with black hair, was a photographer like me and worked in the entertainment section. Luke, who was about my height 5’7 with gray hair though compared to my dark brown, and he covered the film reviews with me. Once in a while, I would help in the crime section. He wrote the article; I took the pictures. They were bringing me to a party at Stuadabakers, a local club in Rockville. They got local DJs Mike Omara and Don Jeranomo from the Don and Mike show to perform.
Zack, are you ready yet?
Vin asked. In a minute, I want to make sure I have everything I need.
I ran back to the bathroom and grabbed my toilet kit. It was the last thing to pack in my suitcase. I just want to make sure the delivery guys have everything they need packed so they can just haul it away and bring what I need to Worcester.
I locked up the apartment and we headed to Luke’s car. When we arrived at the club, a small portion of the city news team that I am familiar with was there waiting for us. This trip was only going to be a temporary leave of absence from the city and I was not expected to be gone longer than a few months. Little did I know I would be gone much longer. Everybody was wishing me fond farewells. Simon came up to me with an envelope. Here you go, Zack. The boss monkey wanted to be here but had major edits to take care of for the debate they are covering tomorrow.
