The Pool
Amanda loved her pool. She loved being on her own away from her parents. She loved being single. But more than anything she loved her pool. She could spend every second by it if possible.
She had her job of course. She loved to teach. She loved going to school and showing her students how exciting literature could be. The Great Gatsby.
1984.
To Kill a Mockingbird.
She loved to teach through these books each year.
But not as much as she loved her pool.
Each day as she was teaching or spending time with friends and family she always had the thought in the back of her mind that she could head home soon and relax by the pool.
But today was Saturday and it was such a beautiful day, with a beautiful Sunday ahead. She had all weekend to relax and be with her pool. And no one around to bother her or break her hypnotic connection with it.
Red.
As Amanda was lying on her back in the blue water of the pool she saw red out of the corner of her eye. What is that red color,
she thought. She took a better look and noticed a tiny splash of red liquid in the corner of her pool. Where did that come from,
she said. I guess something leaked in from a tree. I’ll just clean it later."
After about twenty minutes she opens her eyes and notices that the splash of red in the pool has gotten much bigger. What is going on?
she asked. She noticed that it was not only in the original location but it was also behind her. In fact it was all around the outside of the pool water. All of a sudden she felt trapped.
There red liquid must be coming from the town water supply, which is how her pool worked. The town water supply was connected to a hose that constantly filtered in fresh water to the pool. So far it had been working perfectly nicely. Until now. What in the world was this red liquid.
The red was starting to fill up more of the pool and Amanda became very afraid and didn’t want to touch the liquid. But she was trapped and had no way out except through it. Her heart started to pump so quickly and she was getting dizzy from fear.
What is this red stuff?
she exclaimed.
She started to head towards the center of the pool now which was the only part of the water not contaminated with red. She wanted to call out for help but there was no one near. Perfect for a quiet day, but not so perfect now.
The red kept filling up the space around her eyes. And it was so close now.
It was only inches away from her now and she started to panic and couldn’t breathe. She started to take in whole gulps of water and started to choke on it. Why was this happening!
she thought. The red started to enter her mouth like the other water had. She felt it in
