Foreword
The selected poems by Peter Daventry reflect his deep conviction with Christian belief.
As the reader uncovers the gems of his writing, think back to the Epistle hereunder
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans:
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.
No, if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 16:21-28
Enjoy the thoughts on poetry itself, on love, on nature, on war and on the coming of wisdom.
I have learnt more of him from compiling his poems than I did during his lifetime.
Roger Daventry, - a son.

A Preface
To entertain the ear and sight
is all my simple claim
What odds if fancy’s flickering light
Of stuff and shade make game?
If liberties I take with rhyme,
with metre, or with reason,
yet suffer that a little time,
for fool must have his season.
Which season is a nether-blend
of Spring and Autumn woven
with Summer and to Winter’s end –
all fruitful, as is proven.
To stir you then, or cheer you now,
and over all, to please you,
bear down upon my fruitful bough
whene’er the mood may seize you.
Be patronising as you will,
or critical however,
but smile withal is better still,
and be content, whatever.
So cheer you at my constant flame,
though fitful be the light!
Good days my master and my dame
and sweet dreams by night!
