Solje and Laen lounged on the pillows in their smoking room and wondered what to do with themselves. There was no work the following morning, and they were feeling bored and restless, which was rarely a good combination. Solje was spoiled and rich, which often allowed him to purchase pretty much anyone or anything he wanted. Most of the time, this meant drugs and women. But, being a benevolent kind of person, he always shared the goods with his friend Laen, and the two men often found themselves relatively useless for entire evenings (and often the following mornings) after a good run.

Solje suggested the usual for a night like this. How about we go find Halstor? Might as well, right?

Laen shrugged and nodded. He never particularly liked visiting Solje’s prime dealer – he always seemed especially sleazy and mean-spirited – but he couldn’t think of anything better to waste his time on. Besides, they might find a whore to pick up on the way. It had been a long time since either of them had indulged, and Laen was beginning to feel a little, well, peckish. They’d both lamented the limited selection, but maybe it was time for them to just deal with it. Something was better than nothing, even if the pickings were slim, right?

The pair discussed the possibility, keeping their eyes out for potential women until they found Halstor. The dealer was in relative peace for a lord of his reputation and the time of night. There was only one other person who had gotten to him before they had, though by the looks of it, she was giving him enough trouble to be the typical ten that usually surrounded him.

Please? I’ll do anything, I swear! Laen and Solje could hear her plead as they approached. She was on her knees, her hands clasped together as if he were the god of sustenance and all she had to trade him were her prayers. This was also something they were used to, the blatant begging, but it never got any less awkward to watch.

Now, I told you – he started to say calmly, until she jumped up and started to lick his neck.

"Anything," she said sternly next to his ear, making her point quite obvious.

Halstor pushed her away with some exasperation, shaking his head, before looking up and seeing his favorite customers approach. Solje! he called out, taking a step towards them. He looked relieved to have an excuse to turn his back on the begging girl. And Laen. How good to see you both. What can I do for you tonight? Good old Halstor, always getting down to business without wasting time. People got impatient when it came to drugs. It was probably best for everyone involved to keep it short and simple.

Just the usual, I think, Solje said genially, offering the predetermined amount of coins in advance. Halstor smiled brightly, pleased that at least some people were easy and pleasant to work with.

The girl behind him watched intently as a little packet of leaves traded hands. As it lay in Halstor’s extended fingers, then transferred to the taller man’s palm, she bit her lip quietly, debating whether or not she should grab it and run. But she still had some shred of dignity, even if it was a very tiny shred, and she could not bring herself to do it. Not yet, anyway. The night was young.
