    Karl, Karl!

    As he stirred from his catnap on the veranda at the health club, Karl flinched at the shrill and persistent sound emanating from the woman five feet behind him.

    Here, Karl whispered, vainly hoping the woman would not see or hear him.

    Come on, we’ve got a visitor for supper and we’re hardly ready. Get a move on.

    Sighing, Karl heaved himself up from the table, draining the last dregs of coffee from the blue mug. This was the only exercise he got at the club. She, on the other hand, was devoted to nearly every racquet sport going. She adored beating her male opponents and lived for both the sweat and the victory.

    This was fine with Karl who savoured the respite each Wednesday and Sunday morning when he would close his eyes at the table overlooking the tennis courts and pretend he had a completely different life. She hadn’t mellowed with aged as he had hoped. Instead, time had made her more resolute and confident in her own righteousness.
