CHAPTER 1
Marlton House, Derbyshire
December 1815
Isabella Stone stabbed her needle into her stitchery as if doing so would awaken some magical genii to grant her a wish. If she could, she’d escape from her cousin’s home, Marlton, where she was spending the Christmas holidays. Not that she didn’t love her cousin, Lady Caroline, and the rest of the family, but Aunt Minerva planned to introduce Isabella to her future husband at the Winter Ball. Her aunt had yet to decide who that unsuspecting gentleman would be.
Sitting at her elegant escritoire with its inlaid urn marquetry and mother of pearl escutcheons, Aunt Minerva scratched yet another name on a piece of paper containing the list of suitable matches for Isabella. And Lord Heathwood is looking for a new wife.
Caroline wrinkled her nose. Mama, he has three noisy, uncontrollable brats. You can’t wish for Bella to start her marriage that way.
But she would be a countess. A young lady can overlook many less than desirable situations for the right title.
Aunt Minerva, I don’t require a title,
Bella chimed in. After all, this was her life they were discussing. And I really would enjoy a full Season before I am betrothed.
Her first Season had been cut short upon the death of her mother and she looked forward to another chance in the spring to experience the elegant balls, walks in Hyde Park at the fashionable hour, and most importantly, going to Gunter’s for ices.
Brindleton. Yes, Viscount Brindleton would make an excellent match.
The pen scribbled on as her aunt completely ignored her.
Bella sent a pleading look towards her cousin, who merely shrugged. Feeling defeated, Bella returned to her needlework. Studying her stitchery at arm’s length, she realized taking her frustration out on the needle had only left her with uneven stitches. She unthreaded the needle and began to pick them out.
Her aunt reclined in her chair. Lord Alderton will be in attendance, of course, but he will have eyes for no one save Caroline.
Mama, you mustn’t say such things. He’s never paid me any particular attention.
Caroline’s cheeks flamed brightly.
He doesn’t need to.
Aunt Minerva leaned closer to Bella and said in her all-knowing tones, His father and your uncle have desired the match since Caroline and Alderton were children. Don’t you think they’ll make such a lovely couple?
Should Bella agree with her aunt or offer support to Caroline? She hated these dilemmas. He is very handsome.
There, that should satisfy.
Caroline’s eyes lighted. Isn’t he? We would have such beautiful children.
Bella sighed and thought about the various faces she’d imagined on the husband of her dreams. The ones whose children she saw in her mind, however briefly. Not one of them had sent her flowers after one of the few balls she had attended or wrote to her family when her mother died.
Her future husband had no fixed face; her someday children had a different shade of hair each day depending on her choice of gentleman that day. She couldn’t fathom what it would be like to have known for so long who one would marry, as Caroline had. To have that friendship with a man on which to build one’s wedded life. It must be the most wonderful thing.
