About this ebook

The Circus Infinitus is forced to make an emergency landing in the Wild West. Parts are required for repairs, and the Ringmaster, Professor Abbacus, Dr Tumblety and Felina travel into a small town called Broken Promise to find a blacksmith.

The circus folks discover that Promise Falls is under a terrible curse, and none of its locals can leave. A pair of local card-sharps direct the carnies up into the hills, to a Native American camp where they claim the curse originated.

However, the tribe’s shaman informs the folks that the curse came from an entirely different source. The Ringmaster and his companions must defeat an evil force from within Promise Falls itself – an evil Professor Abbacus knows all too well.

The Circus Infinitus was traveling smoothly through the Immaterium when suddenly the journey aborted without warning. It materialised badly on uneven ground with a juddering crash, several structures crushing solid objects. Before Professor Abbacus could react, there was an agonised squeal of rending metal. He spun just in time to see the entire Omniportallis Machine tear loose from its mountings, spraying bolts everywhere. It came crashing to the floor, narrowly missing the difference engines and the control lever.

The circus folk gaped at the mess in horror. Then Professor Abbacus gave a shriek of utter disbelief and fainted.

"Icarus!" shouted the Ringmaster, hurrying to the Professor’s side. Doctor Tumblety joined him, pulling a small vial of smelling salts from his bag. No good – he doesn’t breathe! the Ringmaster told him. He slapped Professor Abbacus on the human side of his face to try and wake him.

Icarus’s visible eye blinked and he glared wildly up at the Ringmaster. It’s your fault you bastard! he shouted suddenly. If you hadn’t pulled the Omniportallis from the wall when the Stigmata arrived this would never have happened! Shoving both the Ringmaster and Tumblety aside, he struggled to his feet and staggered over to the fallen Omniportallis, all seven of its rings twisted out of alignment. He fell to his knees in front of the shattered device and stared bleakly at the damage.

Icarus, we can fix it- the Ringmaster began.

The Professor turned with a snarl. There were tears on his human cheek. Then he lifted his metal hand and sent sparks flying from his fingertips. "Go away!"

The Ringmaster quickly retreated. Very well. He headed back to the others, gathered uncertainly at the base of the Omniportallis platform. It seems we have been forced to make an unscheduled stop. We’ll need to find out exactly where we are before we can leave. Then the Professor can calculate our spatial coordinates from our location. So a short scouting mission is in order. He directed his attention to Felina and Suresh, waiting patiently off to one side. Would you like to come with me?

The cat-woman nodded, then turned and padded towards the exit, the big six-legged tiger following close behind. The Ringmaster addressed the rest of the group. We’ll be back shortly, after we’ve made sure the outside is safe.

He followed Felina out. Fortunately they had appeared on relatively flat ground, and all the major structures, such as the Big Top, the roller coaster and the Ferris
