About this ebook
Modern risk management practices have failed miserably. We have seen corporate giants collapsing when they have the resources and advice that should have made their failures avoidable. So what went wrong?
The Risk Free SME suggests that the approach taken to risk management is flawed at its very foundation and that a different approach is required. It is commonly agreed that small to medium sized enterprises have a high failure rate and this is something that seems to be acceptable. It isn't. SME's are the future of our economies and it is only their success that will get the global markets back on track.
The corporate dinosaurs have had their day and it is now the time for the smaller and more agile SME. By helping them to consider their business risks differently, they have the best possible chance to not only survive but thrive.
Richard Diston

About this Book
This book is written for anyone who has taken the plunge and started their own business, and for those who are still thinking about it. It is different because it is written by a risk management consultant who understands small business and realises that they urgently need practical, reliable and accessible risk advice if they are not only going to survive but thrive. Risk Free? In an ideal world, yes, but this isn’t an ideal world. We can’t promise that we can make your business totally risk free, but we can help your business become less fragile, which is almost as important. With revolutionary thinking about the concept of risk and its treatment, this book is written in an informal and non-academic way that anyone can pick up and use to make their business less fragile and more competitive, long lasting and profitable.
The information suggested in the later portion of this book has absolutely no academic basis and I make no claim otherwise. We feel that common sense rarely does. There would be no ethical way to demonstrate the differences between our suggested method for risk management and the established systems without knowingly putting somebody’s business at risk – something that we are not going to do to just prove a point. Academics tend to over-think issues and look too deeply when the common sense answers are right before them. Would you rather your business advice be theoretical or practical? Thought so. Let’s get on with it.

I would like to thank Danie Adendorff at Loughborough University for his continued support and encouragement. Danie has continually been there to debate, argue, inspire and torment me in equal measures, and this work would not have been possible without him. Hang in there, Danie – sooner or later somebody is going to start listening to us. ;)
I would also like to thank Nassim Taleb for his genius in both The Black Swan and Antifragile. While we have never met, your work has inspired me to look at the subject of business risk differently and ignited in me a desire to break from the chains of outdated and flawed paradigms in the hopes of
