About this ebook

Dun Lady’s Jess–all horse, all woman, all heart...and the only one left who can save her disintegrating world from magic gone awry.

“...A splendid example of how speculative fiction can let us deal with difficult topics at a safe remove. It’s not preachy, it’s not heavy- handed, it’s just a wonderful picture of people screwing things up and then trying to unscrew them.... Most highly recommended.”
–Hypatia’s Hoard
~~~~~
Arlen of Anfeald is dead–or so his friends believe, for Camolen’s Council of Wizards has been cut down in a treacherous ambush of twisted magic...and the only surviving witness is a palomino stallion named Ramble.
Convinced that the twisted magic is a threat to all of Camolen, Carey--Anfeald’s Head Courier–-plans to question the palomino, using the now--forbidden spell that can change a horse into a human. This is the same spell that once turned Dun Lady’s Jess from horse to human as it took her from one world to another–-from Camolen to the American Midwest.
But once Cary, Jess, and the palomino leave Camolen, racing to obtain the crucial information that can save their world, the damaging magic spreads, blossoming to engulf the unwary and corrupting even the simplest of spells.
Even the spell that can take them home...
Praise for Changespell:
“Doranna Durgin is one of the freshest new voices in fantasy fiction. Her style is clean, uncluttered, and effortless. Changespell is a full-bore, straight-ahead, fast and furious read. I want more!”
–Jennifer Roberson, author of the Karavans and Sword Dancer series
“Durgin tells this deeply insightful and touching tale with a deft clarity. Her eye for detail will delight and astonish you...”
–Hypatia’s Hoard
Praise for Dun Lady’s Jess:
“....Dun Lady’s Jess is unique. Durgin has created a character who is utterly believable as both horse and horse-in-human-body. The setup is brilliant: the magic that causes the transformation is not in the horse, but external, and the creature that is Dun Lady’s Jess must adapt, must find an identity that works in both paradigms. Humans who encounter her, in either body, must also adapt to the reality that created her and that she represents. She cannot be, any longer, just another mare...she cannot be, ever, just another woman....”
–Excerpt from Elizabeth Moon’s Forward for Dun Lady’s Jess
“A thrill ride with a fantasy twist, neatly done by a knowledgeable author – short, sweet, and paced at a gallop, Dun Lady’s Jess can’t help but to win you over.”
–Janny Wurts
“Horses, heroics, and magic–a great combination! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dun Lady’s Jess, a spirited and daring novel. I couldn’t put it down.”
–Kristen Britain, author of the Green Rider series
“Dun Lady’s Jess is a wonderful read for those who are horse fans and those who are just plain fantasy fans or fans of great writing.”
–Josepha Sherman, bestselling author/editor
“Dun Lady’s Jess is everything a great fantasy ought to be: Exciting, moving, and utterly original. Doranna Durgin has spun a marvelous tale, set it in a world that feels as real as our own, and populated that world with characters who will stay with you long after you read the final page. An excellent book, which I highly recommend.”
–David Coe, author of Winds of the Forelands & the LonTobyn Chronicle
“Jess is a tale of wonderfully diverse and riveting characters embroiled in extraordinary events, told with a deftness and care few authors can achieve. Once you begin, you won’t be able to put it down until you know what happens — and then you’ll wish it never stopped. I highly recommend it.”
–Diana Pharoah Francis, author of Path of Blood
Author
Doranna Durgin
Doranna Durgin spent her childhood filling notebooks first with stories and art, then with novels. After obtaining a degree in wildlife illustration and environmental education, she spent a number of years deep in the Appalachian Mountains. When she emerged, it was as a writer who found herself irrevocably tied to the natural world and its creatures - and with a new touchstone to the rugged spirit that helped settle the area, which she instills in her characters. Dun Lady's Jess, Doranna's first published fantasy novel, received the 1995 Compton Crook/Stephen Tall award for the best first book in the fantasy, science fiction and horror genres; she now has fifteen novels of eclectic genres on the shelves and more on the way. Most recently, she's leaped gleefully into the world of action-romance. When she's not writing, Doranna builds author web sites, wanders around outside with a camera and works with horses and dogs - currently, she's teaching agility classes. There's a Lipizzan in her backyard, a mountain looming outside her office window, a pack of agility dogs romping in the house and a laptop sitting on her desk - and that's just the way she likes it.
    I found this to be my least favorite of the three books, but that being said I still found it to be a good read. I disliked that she tore apart the characters that we routed for ,the love we saw bloom and survive in book one ,shattered in sequel at least for most the book. In the end she ties up loose ends and tries to right the wrongs along the plot, but I was left feeling bittersweet about the story that was so moving in the beginning. I will have to see the author rights this in a following book, since there are still so many things left open.
    Another excellent book in the series, starring Dun Lady's Jess, the horse-turned-human. Most of the action takes place in Camelon, the sword and sorcery world. The problem is that magic is suddenly swirling things together, so trees, rocks, animals, and even people suddenly melting into each other, bubbling and swirling, then resolidifying, in small, localized places, and in larger meadows or forest glades. And then nearly the entire Wizard's Council becomes part of one of the mangled magic sections, with only a palamino stallion as witness.Jess spends more of this book as a mare than she has in the previous books, and her reasons are quite understandable. There is a quest, a puzzle, and in some ways, Jess's coming of age as human and horse. One thing the author does very well is keep the people, and animals, real. A painful injury to Carey in the first book causes him problems in the second and third books. I fell into the world of these books, and immediately bought the following books in the series, and devoured them in a day. Loved it.
    Something or someone is warping the magic of Camelon. Spots of wrongness splotch the landscape; as the distortions grow and spread, nothing is safe from the deadly consequences. With the Wizards Council destroyed, Arlen presumed dead, and the country in disarray, Jaime, Carey, Jess and the rest are left to pick up the pieces. The survival of Camelon rests on their ability to figure out a solution, but their actions may split Jess and Carey forever.The story hops between characters and locations fairly quickly, and the plot is not only a bit predictable, but the solution seems too easy once the underlying problem is solved. Most of the drama rests with Jess and Carey and Jess's continued struggle to understand human rationalizations. Still, this is a strong follow-up, and it will be interesting to see where Durgin takes Jess and her friends next.
